2010 Porsche 911 Turbo ~ 0-60 in just over 3 seconds flat
I flew to Portugal the other day to drive the latest Turbo from Porsche... I know, I know, it's not a 930... but I thought you guys would be interested.
Under the rear decklid is an all-new 3.8-liter, direct-injected, all-aluminum engine with .8 bar of boost. It is rated at 500 hp. The 2010 Turbo is really cool.
A 997 Turbo came out with us a few weekends ago when we did the Ann Arbor run. It's a great looking and high performing car; when the prices come down in a few years I'm buying.

I have no doubt that the GT-R may be faster on the track (it is BRUTAL when driven hard), but the 911 Turbo is just so much more rewarding to drive. Oh, I never really mentioned it in the article... but when you floor the throttle while cruising around, the torque literally throws your passenger back into the seat and their arms flail! I've never driven a car where you had to warn your friend that you were going to floor it. With the PDK anticipating downshifts (and matching the engine perfectly) turbo lag is nearly imperceptible. It is sooo bloody quick. - Mike

Mike - thanks for sharing - really great article, I enjoyed. One of the better reads I've had lately. Refreshing.
A fan I 'twas not whenst the 997tt debuted. Sure it was 'fast', just didn't win me over on looks and from what I heard (sadly yet to flog) they were somewhat removing to drive (involvement/tactile-wise). Your piece and another I read on Winding Road have me immediately 180d - great to here so much change and the merrit'ing of a "1/2" chassis designation. Now to scam me some me-time someway somehow sometime - oy. Mike, I'm gonna PM you shortly... |

I still would probably take out the whole interior if I was fortunate enough to own one. performance yes, but 3,600 pounds, ouch.

I owned the previous Turbo (and the 996 Turbo s) and this is in its own league. The acceleration is just incredible and the handling is better than any Ferrari or Lambo. And it comfortably accommodates my two sons in the back. Well there had to be at least one negative!

Considering how robust the old turbo motor was to turning up the wick, has there been any word on how much of "safety margin" was built into this motor?

I heard over on the RL board that the new 998 will be a flat 8 engine and faster yet. When it hits the market we may be able to afford the 997 Turbo since they built so damn many of them.

I flicked through a Car mag here in Australia recently where during a road test, they manged to record an incredible 2.9 sec 0-60mph, the fastest ever for a road car in Australia apparently.
I also saw an article about a 997 Turbo that was driven virtually from the showroom floor for a night at a Sydney drag meet. It consistantly ran in the low 11's with people constantly asking 'what has been done to it?' 'Bugger all' would have been the reply.
