Euro Spec 930
Hello & greetings to all on the forum. I am Alex & am very happy to announce that I am FINALLY a Porsche owner. I was in Germany a few months back & was able to find a 87 930 for a fair price & will be bringing it stateside this Sept. It needs to be 25 Y.O. to skirt the fed process & the car was born Sept 9 87. I plan on heading over then & driving it around Europe then put it on a ship for east coast delivery. I have been researching companies specializing in transport. E.H. Harms is what I found. My q is does anyone out there have any Experience in what I am attempting, & if so any advice to offer regards to E.H. Harms or any other pertinent info. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to this car in so many ways. Cheers.

No experience with international shipping, but that is one fine 930. Love the matching wheel centers.

Beautiful (but then I'm partial to white '87s). Can't help you with getting it over to the states, but meanwhile do enjoy if over in Europe.

Nice looking 930!
Where did you get the info regarding the exemption of 25 year old cars? To my knowledge there is no exemption from federalization. Obama wants your money and is looking in every crack for a quarter. My car is a Euro '85; I was recently served a nastygram from the gestapo to produce my paperwork. They will gladly hold my title until I track down all 27 years of it's history here in the states. It was brought over when new by a service man.

Does it vary state to state?
I know my brother bought a 83 euro in NY, registered in Tx without issue.

Federal ization has nothing to do with the states, the fed simply uses the states to do their dirty work when you register. This car has been registered in 2 states previously in it's 27 years with no issue. Now that the government is looking for money they are using every tactic. My situation proves no car is safe if it must be registered in another state.
Make sure you have ALL your paperwork before you register, nomatter when it came over.

If it is anything like Canada - then ask your friendly Customs and Border Protection guru what the implications are BEFORE you purchase it. In Canada some years of certain cars were not able to be imported at all. Viper , Corvette and Ferrari models come to mind. Like one year it is ok the next model year no then the next model year is ok. The world would be a great place to live in without governments.

BMW uses E H Harms to ship their cars to the US and I had experience last fall with them after taking European delivery on a new 335d. When turning my car over to them after driving around Europe for a couple of weeks, it was a seamless process, at least for a BMW. It then takes 6-8 weeks to get the car in the US. I bet they charge a little more than BMW's cost of $895.

Thanks to all for your comments. As for the import rules they have been researched by me & confirmed, but I will start new thread as was advised. As for RarlyL8, I certainly hope the POTUS does not personally stick his nose into my import but do appreciate your concern. I will keep you all posted as this process takes shape. Thanks again, regards, Alex

25 y/o cars are DOT/ EPA exempt by Federal Laws for import. You are subject to State requirements! Some States are very easy and do not have any emissions/ safety testing. Check the State you will be registering the car in. FL is easy (no emissions and so is CT (no safety but emissions req'd upto 25 yrs). I imported a 1971 car several years back and did all the customs stuff myself in NJ. This was after 911 and Customs were being very "inquisitive". Told him not to side track ()(*%^#) from his duties and paid my fees and got my car out.

So why is my car being flagged after 27 years in the states?
Should I sell it overseas and bring it back? If someone can show me a statute for 25 year exemption I'm all ears.

I had a RoW '85 Carrera that had been registered in four states, no problems, and gained a fifth state after I sold it. Just had to show the letters from DoT, EPA, and what was then USCS. It was subjected to the normal cursory safety inspections, and it passed a rolling dyno emissions test with a new cat and tune up. Really, no BFD. I hear from the current owner every month and he has had no post purchase hassle since he bought the car from me 8 years ago.
I had hassle in the '90s importing an American-made vintage Indian motorcycle from Canada, but it was solved by hiring a broker. Also, I sold a north American spec Cayman to a Canadian, and there were 21 paperwork steps involved in his driving it home, which he did, no problem. Brian: call your congressman's office and ask them about the 25 year exemption. They get this question weekly. Or maybe contact PCA or AACA. Last edited by M5guy; 06-05-2012 at 03:57 AM.. |
