AFR Meter question

I was going to get an AFR meter for my 77 Turbo. The engine was rebuilt about 1.5 years ago, but I have only put on less that 1000 easy miles. I want to be able to monitor the AFR as I am driving. I am still fairly new to this, and not sure what I would need. Would I need something like the Innovative LM-2?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would skip the LM-2 as it still has problems. Yes you need a wideband system with possibly a gauge too. LC-1 and a gauge does not cost too much

Lc-1

I just bought this system. It has room to grow as do you needs. After reading many posts, this was the way I decided to go for now. Philip

So far I've been quite happy with my LC-1 AFR and G3 analog gauge.

I have lm-1, lc-1 with gauge, lma-3 and a dual sensor LM-2 and the last one has had the most trouble but it is usable now with some add on components.

If you want to log without PC then you need one that has memory option like LM-1 or DL-32

This is the one I have and it is terrific. Comes with 2 hours of data logging, all wiring and software for just a little over $400.

The Innovate stuff has made no significant changes in years. Read the posts here.....overly complicated and expensive.

I did all the research a year ago and this is what I came up with. The Daytona-Sensors Wego IV is the best deal out there.

Tach hooks up easily without adapters, records 2 hours of data, charts it. Records ROM, AFR, and one other input. Plug USB into the front and download the data.

Sold by our hosts here....Pelican Parts

i just updated to the new mtx-L this is their newest and i got it due to the fact that the conditions we put the lc-1 "brain" is not like other cars ie temps the new one i dont like the digital look as being period correct but it is way more accurate as i need this for tuning my efi. it is spot on. the wiring is way easier and it really is accurate. it does have an extra output that i will eventually hook up to my g-5 guage which does fit the cars guage look. it comes with a 10 foot (8 plus the 2 foot o2 sensor) or an optional 16 foot cable. this is what we 930 guys need and at 199.00 plus the 69.00 for the cable its accurate at last

This is the kit.

Very high quality and very easy to use and reliable.

Has helped me tune my 2.7 MFI motor really well.

This is what chart looks like

How much data logging time does it have? you need data logging to do anything useful.

I like the VEMS stuff, very cool, and good prices: data logging, additional inputs, customizable display

I have been using the lc-1 with gauge for yrs and works great no problems. I don't know what is considered complicated. If you are just looking to monitor A/Fs as you drive it is great.
After install just calibrate and you are done. When I bought mine I did alot of research for the accuracy and the innovative was at the top at that time and that was the most important to me.. I did not want to save money at the expense of accuracy.

Do these other systems have control for sensor aging? Most of the systems have free air calibration but if the sensor has gone bad it's not good enough.

Quick copypaste from a wb shootout from couple of yrs back.

"With one of these sensors, the Innovate XD-16 would show an error code indicating that the sensor was bad. However, when we connected the same damaged sensor to any of the analog gauges they read as much as 3 AFR off. Again, the obvious question is: If your gauge can't tell you when a sensor is bad, how could you ever trust it?"

Link to the shootout pdf:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.innovatemotorsports.com%2Fres ources%2FFM_WB_Shootout.pdf&rct=j&q=innovate%20wideband%20sensor%20aging&ei=11uZTY3jM8iAOrXW-JIH&usg=AFQjCNF2GcfcKxC_Fy1MrFjykX4TNBl7JQ&cad=rja

Another thing to consider is sample rate and signal prosessing: Innovate stuff detects misfires and show them as lean spots. Some other systems just average the misfires and show the readings too lean for possibly several seconds.

I have a "In Your Face Gauge" that is the PLX. The gauge was mounted where the stock boost gauge was in the tach. I like it but some people don't. I have not had it in very long.

Bumping this old post...

Any more tips about this out there? I am in the same boat and Wego looks pretty good. So would it be Wego vs LM-1?? I would appreciate any tips as well.

Thanks!

I installed the WEGO about a month ago. Price was on the high side, install was no problem, is working fine. Make sure you get the additional wire to run the sensor. I didn't install the tach output yet, trying to think of an easy way to get at the back of the tach still.

Thanks for the reply. How did the o2 sensor fit with your RarlyL8 and where did you mount the display?

Any pictures?

Thanks!
