Linc ...con grats on the new ride , like everyone else to bad you really never got to enjoy the 930...
This problem we all have is not over stepping our bounds when building these air cooled monsters. This something no one starts to do it just happens !!!
I drive mine a lot and keep that in mind so 400hp is just fine , just get it to the ground and hang on through the corners ...LOL ...
I spent many evening reading your story and truly felt your pain through the whole ordeal . Learned a lot through the whole story ,have to thank everyone involved for telling it like it is from beginning to end. There is no easy way out for these air cooled motors...
The only thing you always keep in the back of your mind is "when they run dam do they run hard "
Keep your head up it only money ...right

OK, a couple of comments:

A completely stock 930 of any vintage is an undeveloped performance platform. If that performance level satisfies you, get rid of the sometimes troublesome 930 and buy a nice 993 with a chip and better flowing exhaust and you will have almost identical performance.. or a 3.6 996 that will blow both of them away.

An intelligently modded 930 is a fantastic, satisfying, and fun performance piece.

Build it- or anything- to the absolute limit- and you can expect what happens when you are pushing the envelope. To be happy, you really should consider how you want to use the end result and what the car will be like.

As far as a 996/7 tt vs 930.. be serious. A modded 930 is a LOT more fun! TONS! I have a tweaked 996 GT2 as well as my built 930 and the 930 is a sensational car with a fantastic sound. I LOVE to light it off and listen to that engine before I start off. It is so alive and responsive... The GT2.. well it sounds like a loud bucket of bolts at cold idle [I have 3 exhausts for this and have yet to hear anything that actually sounds great until you get a lot of revs and throttle]. It is tons more refined and, yes, considerably more powerful [4 valve heads, advanced computer controls, etc]. It will get me into incredible trouble [unlike your tt, it only has ABS]. if I relax for a second while doing anything other than loafing along. Entirely different propositions. To suggest that the later car is better - faster? You are joking, right? I know my 6-2 will wipe that 7-tt performance wise. I know that my 930 is almost as fast as my 6-2 right now, and I am about to do an ems change over to take advantage of well built engine that is just waiting for a further wake up call. However, I haven't lost track of the primary purpose of this machine, to be an enjoyable, reliable, fast, and fun performance machine. IF you want to mod your tt to 650hp or so, you can perhaps accurately claim to have a faster car... if you can enjoy it like that. [and what are you doing on a 930 site bragging about a water buffalo? Go to 6speedonline and see how your ride compares to the others there..where it belongs! tee hee.]

BUT, comparing air cooled [more oil than air, but who is worrying?] to a water pumper is about as relevant as bring up the variety of Corvette/Lambo/Ferrari/R8/McL etc. Different cars. Bring on that Cayenne Turbo S and have more fun while towing a much more involving car.

WOW, this is like a best seller that you can't put down. Unfortunately all non -fiction. I'm afraid I'd be in jail if I went through what Mr Philip endured with that car.

Wow! Welcome back Lincoln. I was at a PCA Concourse event in Raleigh N.C. a couple weeks ago and saw someone that reminded me of you.

Cheers

Hey Lincoln - great to see you emerge here again!

You didn't buy Alex's Mooney in NH did ya? He just mentioned he'd sold it last week...

Aviation- out of the 930 frying pan and into the fire!
Someone’s signature here says “A heroin habit would have been cheaper.” Your post reminded me of that somehow.
Good to see you resurface, Lincoln.
