Extra horse

I just bought a bone stock 1988 Porsche 930 turbo Cabiolet.

It is an amazing car however I am looking for some ideas to get some more power out of it. I dont really want to crack the engine open so looking for other ideas. I have been searching around and did find this fabspeed kit which looks pretty good. Is there any thoughts or suggestions?

i have their intake, zork tube, also an exhaust, and a wastegate dump,...

customer service is top notch and so are the products

My opinion in order of installation:

1) muffler without a catalytic converter (about $1000)
2) headers preferably with heat boxes (about $2000)
3) bigger intercooler (about $1500)
4) 1 bar waste gate spring or adjustable boost regulator (about $100) (be careful with this one as it will probably make the engine run lean. This isn't a big problem with street driving, but continuous high speed driving can hole a piston)
5) modified fuel head and/or adjustable warm up regulator to better adjust air-fuel ratio. (about $300 or so)
6) better turbo (about $1500)

Thanks for this. Can you (or anybody recommend models and brands) I am going to start collecting them over the winter.

It's traditional to post a pic and your location here...
I'd recommend Rarlyl8 (as mentioned above) for most of the above (headers, exhaust, intercooler)

My two cents.

First set your goals clearly.

Stage 1: lowest back pressure sport muffler you can stand for faster boost onset and more HP, set Co to 3% (might have to leave O2 disconnected) for better acceleration AFR's off idle and a K27-7200 Turbo from the 91-94 turbo for faster and cooler boost.

Dyno tune it. Set timing on a dyno on a warm day on the gas you will be using to be safe. Working toward more low rpm timing advance should help wake it up. Work toward a solid .8 to .85 bar boost under load. Goal is about 13/1 AFR off idle preboost and about 11.5/1 at TQ peak.

Stage 2: Lower ring and pinion. Transforms the off the line and under 50mph performance.

At this point the car will still mostly look stock except for the muffler and run safe.

Welcome!
How much power are you wanting?
It is quite easy to get 375WHP with bolt-ons alone. Along with more power you can also improve driveability with the right mods.
You don't want the C2T parts but rather those designed for the 930.

Damn, that brings back some old memories of some of my Physics courses taken wayyyy back in my college days. Understand the formulas and concepts, understand the physical nature of the world we live in, and start chopping weight off your car....or adding power...or any combination of the two to gain the performance you're looking for. Thanks for the help.

I would be more than happy with the bolt on options....I hope

To clarify a chip would do nothing on this car I assume?

The '88 930 has no chips as the only electronics involved in engine management is the Lambda system. These engines are basically unchanged from 1976-1994. The 993tt was the first turbo with EFI in 1995.

Ok so to reinvent this thread...
I went with a Stebro exhaust first and a 930 s steering wheel (no horsepower but cool as hell).

The mechanic says next I should get a full length intercooler. 3500 for part. Not sure of the brand but good one. Sound ok? or looking for suggestions.

Then after the intercooler what next?

best thing to swap out is replace the stocl 3ldz turbo with k27 or k27s turbo along with the intercooler remove the cat or replace with a free flowing cat.
That will make a big difference.

Rudy,

Good advice as to the intercooler although for a street driven car a fullbay is probably overkill and a lot more money. When you buy a cooler make sure to get a long neck cooler and convert to the 964 type BOV set up. Kokeln, Andial, Garretson, Ruff, and a stock 964 are all good choices. Prices on a good used example should run between $700 -$1200. The intercooler needs to be the next item you to buy as it is your best bet for dealing with the higher temps and more boost that you will be going for as you progress.

I just love it when someone says this: "...but....but....I want MORE!!!!!". I've decided I'm through with the "more" and want to degrade to stock "less". It's just been too exciting for my fat clogged heart. Everytime I hook 'em up, I risk blowing a vein. Just bury me with my car.

Rudy,

I'm sure the Fabspeed IC is probably just fine although I have not heard a lot about them.

Your best bet on doing anything to the car is the search function at the top right of the forum page. We have all been where you are at right now and it's very easy to get caught up in all the stuff you read here and then run out and buy parts that aren't the best fit for the way you are going to use your car. The first thing I would tell any new member is before you do anything just stop and decide exactly how your going to use the car, Street, Track, or Both. Where do you want your performance to be bottom end, lite to lite, mid range, or on the big end. How your going to use the car is going to dictate what you need and what you buy. So the best advice anyone could give you right now is before you buy anything do a search, read the threads, ask questions, determine which product is a fit for the way you are going to use the car.

Knowledge is king and this forum has a wealth of it when it comes to Porsche's.
Everyone here has been where your at and they are all more than willing to help. Ask all the questions before you buy.

Cole

Fabspeed

I have one of the first ones they made. All I can tell you is that it is the best upgrade I have done. Price has gone up since I got it. They also did an upgrade by putting a air catching guard around the top of the intercooler. I know this because Mike over at MTECH just installed one this week and I saw that.

One thing I will tell you about the Fabspeed the hose they send you to connect the IC to the Throttle body is way to small. It will blow off on boost. Myself along with Mike at MTECH called them and now Mike brought his own hose so when he does one he replaces the hose that came with the Fabspeed one.

You would think that with complaints they would replace it but no word from them. I know Mike has done at least 4 Fabspeed upgrades and everyone had the same problem. My car was the first. The one he did this week was the same hose.

Beside's that. The quality of the unit and the package you get with it is second to none. You will not be disappointed.

Rob.

Also. It will be useless for you to get that intercooler with out doing a Turbo upgrade. The stock turbo is fine with the stock intercooler. Get a K27 or larger and the Fabspeed intercooler will work wonders. Also get an fabspeed filter for your intake. Also another great cheap upgrade.

Rob

Rob,

Really nice to have an opinion from someone who has the particular product we are talking about. Appreciate the input.

I understand what you were saying about upgrading the turbo but I would not agree that the IC upgrade is useless without the turbo upgrade. Adding a larger and more efficient IC on any Turbo applcation adds much needed cooling. These cars run exceptionally
hot reguardless and a larger IC should the first addition ever done if you are looking for added performance or not. Adding a newer design and more efficient Turbo in conjunction with the larger IC optomizes the package.

Cole
