Now would be a good time to clean everything back under there and replace the old cold flowed rubber trailing arm and spring plate bushings. Make sure the fuel lines going to and from the rear fuel pump are not dry rotting and cracking when you flex them.
When I worked at a street car shop nobody ever took the time to use coat hangers or whatever and tie up the dangling CV joints. It's always a good idea to do that if you do more work under there or roll the car on the ground with the outer CV's still bolted in place but as long as nobody pulls on them they won't be hurt just hanging there with their own weight. Is that a charcoal canister up on top of the shock tower cross member? |

yeah it has something to do with emissions? I will ask if its a charcoal cannister? they are redoing the cvjoints as well as one of the boots is torn. I have a new sound pad going in and I noticed the rubber around the inside was pretty dry out, is that worth replacing? i assume it would help seal up the airflow for better engine cooling? they said there is some strange stuff going on with the fuel lines as well, I thought i had a good picture but i will repost one this afternoon. I am also wanting to pull all the smog stuff off but I am not getting a good feel either way from you guys on that. I dont need need it.

Replacing the dried out squished rubber air seal you mentioned is a good thing. Would be a wise move on every old 930 out there and now's the time to do it.
If you don't need the air pump to pass emissions remove it if you want. Gets rid of weight and frees up alot of space on top and under the motor. Cut the cogged belt that is probably worn anyway, unbolt everything and plug the holes in for the air injectors in the exhaust ports in the heads. You can buy nice stainless steel allen head 10x1mm plugs that come with copper sealing rings here. I put them in with a 3/8 ratchet and extension very tight with red loctite and they havn't come loose in 5 years of driving. You can get rubber plugs at auto part stores to seal the holes for the hoses in the engine tin. It looks like there may be an extra return line on the fuel head and control pressure regulator. Hard to tell with the blurry pic. Last edited by JFairman; 06-30-2011 at 08:40 AM.. |

some more pics, apparently my last mechanic adjusted the timing to the ignition timing and not the cam timing so i have some nicks on the pistons.

I thought you were just fixing oil leaks. Why pulling heads?
Are you doing the work or a shop? Last edited by dhg1337; 07-12-2011 at 12:11 AM.. |

using a shop, the engine has only 37K miles but was not cared for the greatest. I don't drive the car much and i really want to ensure as best i can a good strong clean running engine. not doing any upgrades to it. keeping it all stock.

Is that also 37k on the car? I hope I am not being to nosy,
what kind of arrangement do you have with the shop on price of all this work? Does it keep going up every day? |

yeah 37K on the car all original, I don't mind saying as i know my wife is not on this forum. THe engine was gone through by a very reputable local porsche guy here in phoenix, he did a ok job and thought he had everything licked last fall, there were 2 leaks left, the tranny and something on the cam towers. well after getting it back and having them come pick the car up twice due to things not being right and me spending about a day getting the intercooler back in right i said no way im going back to them. that was about 7 or 8K. new brakes and a few other things done but no mods or anything. so fast forward to last month I took it directly to Porsche Scottsdale. they seem very familiar with the car and the mechanic working on it is one of 2 guys there that specifically work on air-cooled engines and he knows the engine like the back of his hand. THey are charging like 4900 to drop and reseal the motor and another 1500 to machine the heads, and who knows what the extras will be. Im having all the engine tin powder coated myself. I am a very limited mechanic with very little patience so I really did not want to try and do this myself. I know its going to be more but I should have just taken it them in the first place. all the stuff the other guy did with out dropping the engine is being re=done. so besides the brakes i just pissed away a lot of money.
