Caught on fire!

So the wife and I are driving from Philly to Pittsburgh to see my niece. We're in the 1986 930. Suddenly smoke starts pouring out of the dash vents, so I quickly pull over and smoke is pouring out of the hood. I pop it open and the carpet over the battery is on fire! I grabbed the wife's water bottle and put it out. On closer inspection, there's a black plastic sphere with a single two pronged plug going into it and it burned up from an electrical short. It appears to be part of the ventilation, but I'm not sure as we were on 579 in the median during rush hour with everyone in a hurry to get home. What is the component?

Fortunately, the paint didn't bubble, but the device and carpet are destroyed. I checked everything out, disconnected the plug, and we were on our way with no further problem.

Pictures to follow when I get home.

Sounds like the front AC condensor fan burned up. They are known for that and most or all of them don't have a fuse unless someone put one in.

Good thing you caught it and your car didn't burn down.
You can find used working front AC condensor fans in the classifieds from time to time and appbiz.com is a good place for trunk carpet.

My same fan Jim mentined was seized but I never used the non functional AC so I got lucky an didnt have your scenario. Griffiths AC set me up with a higher output motor and freed up my cage. I spliced in a 7.5 amp inline fuse on the hot leg. Definitely an oversight on Porsche's part.

Interestingly, my a/c works well (other than the side vent freezing my knee). I'll look into the Griffiths set up. Thanks, Ken.

Water bottle = lucky

Buy the proper extinguisher, please.

I always carry an extinguisher. Her water was simply more handy. Here's a couple pics:
