Trade 996 turbo for 1979 930???
I don't have anything in mind but if value of each were the same would you trade? Why would you or why not?

no.
930 = classic / future classic 996 = unloved, unpopular, never be collectable, frumpy looking. And they actually ARE about the same price now. One is depreciating, one is appreciating. |

Bingo
The 996 is the red headed stepchild of the Porsche world. A dealer here has a pristine 2001 996tt 50k miles 44k. I paid 50 for my slant a yr ago, I could get 65k for it tomorrow. You tell me which one is better. Last edited by Tt surgeon; 09-30-2012 at 03:59 PM.. |

I'm thinking strictly from a performance perspective. My car will NEVER be collectable due to the fact it is so far from stock and will continue that direction. I'm just wondering about the newer technology, performance, and such. The only thing I don't like about the 996 are the headlights.

Nope. One is a classic another is not. One is air cooled and another is water cooled. One is simple to work on another has more complicated electronics. One has closer roots to its beginnings another is further from its roots.

Hmmm, just last week I went for a ride in a built 996tt. The car had been worked over in terms of turbo system and suspension. I was shocked at the cars ability and light nimble feeling. So little lag, and so much torque. I only got to enjoy it a 21psi hehe, and apparently it runs more. Did 201 at the texas mile. I completely agree about the above comments regarding heritage and solid value of good early 930s, but I have a new-found respect for what the 996 is capable of with only bolt on parts.

A 996TT with GT2 wing, wheels, and lowered is beautiful. But, don't think if I had a 930 I could trade. I rather hold on to the 930 and wait until I could acquire the 996TT outright.

I never really comment on compare threads. But a 996 turbo is not a red head step child. LOL. A 996 non turbo, I would agree. Lots of problems. A 996 turbo is a great car. Not many problems. I love my 930 and miss it every day. I am going to buy a turbo in the next year. I still have not decided if it will be a 996 or 997. 997 is a beautiful car interior, but a 996 with a euro suspension and a few upgrades is a dream to drive and play. That's my 2 cents.
Also to answer, No I would not trade my 930 for a 996 turbo. Two complete different cars, 930 is so much more fun to drive. If you want to drive it every day the 996 turbo is the way to go.

NO, NEVER - the 930 rules! Ask anyone old enough to drive and they will tell you the same thing - the 930 is the most instantly recognized shape that ever was a PORSCHE. AND, oh yes, the 934 and 935, never again will a production model spawn such offspring.

I recently had a client who had bought a great 1979 930 from me years ago (in photo ), want a 996TT. So I found him a real nice one and he really likes it. His reasons were drivability, air conditioning, tiptronic ( nice) and all of the other improvements that add weight and unknown potential future problems with the complicated electronic equipment. Also there now will not be controversy of "shift points etc" when on road trips. They love the 2001 996 and I really like getting the 30T color code 33K mile one back.

I love both my 930 turbo and 996TT. My 996TT will out perform the 930 in every way and do it flawlessly. It is a great value and the engines are bullet proof. I could get in my 996 and drive to New York and feel very confident that it won't even hiccup. It is modified with bolt ons and gives me 550whp and the same torque. I cannot remember loosing a street race in the car.
That being said, I still love my 930T and would never sell it. It is my favorite car to drive for sure. It scares the hell out of me at times, and demands respect. It is loud, shakes, rumbles and smells of unburnt fuel. I don't think I would trust it on a long distant trip. It is old, classic and is no doubt one of the best looking Porsches ever built. They are totally different and both totally awesome in my simple opinion.

Ok, I am NOT saying the 996TT is a bad car, i personally like them. However, in both the larger Porsche community, as well as the general public, people either want the "classic" 911 silhouette, or the edgy raw new 997 or 991 look. The 996 is like a 997 someone put into the oven and let it melt a little bit. Its all soft-edges and an "executive rocket" look. Classics are the cars that blew peoples minds, not the ones that were designed for soft mass-appeal.
I drove my 930 1400 miles halfway across the country in 23 straight hours after no more than a cursory tune-up after being stored undriven for 5 years. no a/c and leaking more oil than the Exxon Valdez the whole way. Ran FLAWLESSLY! I would trust mine any day. Last edited by Groovie Ghoulie; 09-30-2012 at 07:21 PM.. |

The 930 will always be the classic Porsche. I have vacillated between keeping the 930 or buying a 996tt. The 996tt is an awesome performance bargain and prices keep dropping. I think I'm going to keep my 930 and buy a 996tt to go along with it. With the 930, you have the raw, loud, nasty bad boy car. With a 996tt, you get awesome performance, with surgical handling in a car that gives you GT comfort.
