What to do with these...
Having installed a new engine/gearbox last winter, I now have these sitting on my garage floor. This is the orig. drive train from my 87/930. 75K on the clock. Leak down #'s good when I purchased the car a couple of years earlier, but had typical leaks, and I believe the motor/box was never out of the car. Should I sell as cores, or parts? Or store them? Any ideas on what they would be worth?

True, as a future classic, numbers matching will mean EVERYTHING.
also: Since when was it bad to have a spare longblock and gearbox for when you lunch the modified ones? |

Hey Matt, I had to lay off the crack to pay for the new build! Seriously, I don't think the car will ever go back to stock. I don't think as the car as an investment, but to enjoy, and drive it like its stolen

I would save them, your car is worth more with matching numbers.
Never say never, everybody sells their cars eventually.

I would guess $1.5-2k for the box and $7500 for the long block.
Money is money. Sometimes you need it more than other times. |

Except for driving over to the local concourse event so you can stand around and drink coffee talking about how you painted all the screw heads on your car black and what wax your using, why on earth would you want to drive a stock car? That is crazy talk.
I you are a hoarder and do not need the money I would keep them both, someday you will be glad you did.

I'd be interested in the transaxle for a spare to rebuild when one of mine goes bad. I just a had a failure that required scrambling. Would have been nice to have a fresh spare to install instead. Shoot me a price if you decide not to keep it. Oh I need it to be LSD. Thanks Tony

Unless you are talking about type numbers (930/xx) there is no such thing as matching numbers on a 930. The type numbers represent engines produced by market and time period which may be several years, not a specific engine in a specific car. VIN number also will not tell you what tranny or engine is in that 930. Option code may tell modifications if it is a special model such as the S/SE.
Unless you're a pack rat or plan another project build these items just take up space and are unrealized investments.

Now to my thinking, in most cases, that is so true.

In my case I have many 930 cars in my dealership/collection and also many clients that have them, so a spare one seems like a good idea.

![]() This collector car thing is sooo far out of hand it's pathetic. Some cars are and some cars aren't. However, 930's are far from rare and most of us who own these cars will never realize their "supposed" worth in the market. Not to mention (and this is just my opinion and I hope I'm wrong).. the generations that are coming behind us could really give a hoot about most of the cars that we think are collectible. So the question becomes, as we buy and hold, who the hell are we going to sell them to? Remember, most that can afford this stuff are getting older.. not younger. So if you look at it, those that are primarily drooling, hoarding, collecting, and trading in this stuff are baby-boomers.. and maybe a generation or two after. I mean those of use that were fortunate enough to appreciate the lack of electronic controls, and also fortunate enough to have the ability to make some real money in our life-times and be in the position to afford the cars that we couldn't in our younger days. Oh that's Great for us! With the changes and the make-up of the "new world economy," and the types of jobs available to those coming through (even as professionals) at this point, and in the future.. , coupled with the wages that they may or may not earn.. just may not support the luxury of the hobbies we enjoy... even if the interest is there. Hmmm, just a thought..

Oh, and back on topic..
I too think I'd cut the spares loose unless I needed them for something. $1500 or less for the trans is about right depending upon condition. $7500 for the motor in my opinion is over the top as it will need a build. And there is nothing special about a Turbo motor as a core..p&c's need to be changed to use it for anything else and it's a long block as pictured, will need ancilliary pieces to complete. More like $4200

I'm sort of with onboost, in a way. With Google cars now legal in CA and the forecast that not too long from now most cars will be self driving; with statistics showing younger people less interested in cars; with the future economy looking grim; with potential taxes based on miles driven rather than on dollars at the pump ...I'd sell the parts for cash unless you have a need. You can always get another block or trans later if you need one.
If you have room to store, however, it may be worth keeping and rebuilding on the side so you have ready to go spares when you need them...

Lots of opinions here...
Well I'm from the "sell them camp". My guesstimate was the low end figures that were mentioned here. I had a few PM's and will work my way down the list of those who contacted me one way or another. It's good to see all the opinions, and they all make sense in there own way. I'm at a stage in my life where I'm not looking to far into the future with any plans. Had I had this opportunity a few years ago, the parts would not be sitting on the crate as the pics show, but torn apart and cleaned up, ready for service by now. Keep the posts coming, it's good to hear from you all.
