I admit when I drove my friends '89 I wished I had a 5 speed also. But no way am I going to change out my current gearbox, no way.

After 28 years I guess I'm used to 4 little old speeds. You don't miss what you don't have I've heard.

SCHNELE 12-19-2012 01:08 PM

Ok, according to the divorce folder I paid PMS $13,200 for the G50/50 and the labor to install is around $8K in 2006 dollars. I love the G50/50 but after getting out of the ether I would say not worth it, remember you need a new pedal cluster and hydraulic lines and you do not have to modify the torsion tube if you have the shortened bellhousing but the engine is moved back approximately 1". The shifting is amazing but is it 20K+ better? Arguably not, I did manage to sell off some of my old parts to offset new cost but it was still a bundle of cash. This car has been the most visceral and intoxicating machine I have ever owned at once it is trying to kill you while also eliciting school girl like giggles and HELLA SEXY! I have been a fool for this old girl more than any other, and never again will I undertake such an endeavor.

So almost 21K for your conversion Schnele but I have followed your build thread and your trans seems to be head and sholders above most stock set ups. I am feeling fortunate that I purchased my car with the 5 speed in it. I do not think I would ever spend over 20K on the conversion. But now that I have it I am glad I do

carreraseacat 12-19-2012 03:15 PM

i quite like my 4 speed, think it suits the car well. and i like being able to do 60mph in first!

SCHNELE 12-19-2012 03:25 PM

If I recall correctly my car is geared to 213mph with the Paul Guard Chromoly diff, motorsport gears, synchros and billett side plate etc., it is very well built but I had a similarly built four speed box, with a very balky shifter. I bet the guys with the Wevo shifter upgrade love it and wouldn't consider going to a five speed.

s5uewf 12-19-2012 04:01 PM

With EFI, K27s turbo, and free flow exhaust I find driving with my 4 speed to be fine. I can accelerate from 2,000 RPM with no hesitation and get the "slingshot" feeling as the boost kicks in with no issues.

Had a G50 before in my old Carrera. Loved it. Shifted much easier than the 4 speed does.

If ratios become a bother, though, I think I'd prefer to change ratios in the 4 speed rather than convert to 5 speed.

RarlyL8 12-19-2012 04:14 PM

I've driven both as well. The 5spd is good for a stock engine, the 4spd good for a modified engine. No way in hell I'd spend any money to install a 5spd, I'd spend that money on the engine! If keeping a stock engine I'd install a 915.

Rodsrsr 12-19-2012 07:20 PM

I agree with Brian. I have a slightly modded 3.2 running .6 bar boost with a rebuilt 915 LSD. Although I cant do all out drag races, its still a lot of fun once your rolling. I just cant justify the cost of going to a G50. Brians right....Take two 930's; one has a stock 3.3 with a 20,000 G50 upgrade and now take the other with a stock 4 speed but the same 20k put into the 3.3 motor and see which one will be more fun. :p

vas930 12-19-2012 08:11 PM

Well, I always felt my stock 89 with the 5 speed was like a 350hp 4 speed, if you know what I mean.
I would rather a 400hp 5 speed than a 500hp 4 speed.
Not as fast in a straight line, but a better drive all round.
On track, as I use my car, give me that 5 speed.
Just my opinion.

Akila 12-19-2012 10:32 PM

Alternate: find a RUF box, pay through the nose & call it a day!:D

carreraseacat 12-20-2012 12:20 AM

haha, it's cosmic karma.

after saying i like my 4 speed, i get stuck at the lights during my lunchtime drive as i couldn't get it into first!!

Mario Motta 12-20-2012 02:27 AM

Guys, i was lucky then, i found a g50/03 coming from a 964, + the gear stick lever, pedals, gearshift rod and a rear cover of g50/01 from carrera 89 for less than 2500euros. I did the shortening by myself and i installed centerforce pressure plate +clutch from the earlier turbo. No modification on the body exept a little bit of more space for the gear stick lever. Here in Sicily a five speed gearbox is a must because it's all about hill climb. I could'nt enjoy the car with the original gearbox, looking always for the first gear before curves.

EXACTLY. I am surprised no-one else on this thread has picked up on this. Changing the ratios of 2nd, 3rd and 4th to achieve something close to the overall 2/3/4 ratios of a 5 speed box is by far the cheapest and easiest way of having the 5 speed "experience".

SCHNELE 12-20-2012 06:50 AM

Bill we are all aware of modified ratios, if you knew the way I drive I am not interested in giving up my top end speed so modified ratios were not an option. I have a built motor and a built trans to match, even before Chris got his hand on it, it was bloody fast albeit it did not hold together. Turbo Hayabusa bikes are very afraid at speeds over 120.

smurfbus 12-21-2012 12:41 AM

I have a close ratio trans but I do miss one longer gear for highways.

totle 12-21-2012 06:11 AM

The previous 2 years I have had a 8:39 R&P in my 930 transmission.
I missed the longer 4'th gear and installed the stock R&P.
Now I kind of miss the closer 1-3 gears, but still like my stock 4'th.

This is my reason to wanting to have a G50 installed.

drmatera 12-21-2012 08:01 AM

looks like somebody scored a G50-01 from eBay for $2900. I was looking at it last night and was just about to pull the trigger when my internet went down. When I got to work this morning it was sold...

SCHNELE 12-21-2012 08:59 AM

Darrin you probably didn't miss much, the G50/01 can be had in like new condition for around $6500 from PMS. My trans build added the Motorsports components and the Guard chromoly diff with all the tricks so $$$

drmatera 12-21-2012 12:18 PM

I guess so, it didn't have an LSD so figure another $1500 on the pile plus rebuild costs on top of that. So now i'm back crunching gear ratios for my 4 speed. Only problem is it's missing a gear to fill in the empty spot. damn the 5 speed gods
