Mine has stock 1st with shortened 2nd thru 4th gears (done by a PO) with stock R&P. I like it but do wished for 5th gear. I think it tops out around 150-160. I've thought about changing 2nd thru 4th gear so that its ratio is between stock 4sp and current short gearing. I suppose this would result around 180 mph top speed.

I really dislike the long stretch from 1st to 2nd gear with the 4 speed. In traffic it's either bogging or revving. But when you do the math on a shorter 2nd to compensate for that it creates a wider gap to 3rd, so you tighten 3rd up which is ok except I like to drag race my car and with a steeper 3rd Iwon't be able to go thru the traps in 3rd anymore and 4th is way to tall. It's missing a gear right in between 3rd and 4th

The 930 4 Speed feels too crude and mechanically slow for my taste especially after driving and falling for 964 / 993s.
Then there were the G50 type gearboxes and these set the benchmark. Naturally the G50 5-Speed from the Carrera 3.2L makes a great choice and have ideal, shorter and realistic gearing for the turbos. Not many need to drive 180+mph! If you want an overdrive or taller 5th, the G50-50 5th for cruising could be used. For 500+tq, gearing, LSD, motorsport use, the side cover and cooler system is absolutely necessary for longer term durability. Then what did Porsche do? 1989 Turbo / G50-50 reinforced and taller gears. Then Ruf R50.50 6-Speeds and again based on G50. If you are considering this conversion, the budget needs to include the core box, pedals and shifter. Installation requires clearance of the chassis or gearbox to fit a 911 /930 Turbo (It's too long). Lincoln, it killed me to see your chassis trimmed to fit the G50-50 and boost charge pipe! Then add the SBH option (machine case and mainshaft) so the chassis is left un cut. Then add cost for diff, rebuild parts, gearing, cooler, flywheel clutch etc. Next thing you know you just eclipsed $10K. But this a %100 reversible upgrade! Never have I heard anyone upset with such a conversion. If you need to build your tired 4-speed, that can approach $10K as well. For those of you who just need to have the ultimate: Happy Holidays! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356297009.jpg |
My chassis was not trimmed for the G50/50, it is a shortened (housing and mainshaft) one from PMS, I did have the back tin and the latch panel for the decklid radiused for the large charge pipe that is no longer utilized, many drill out this area for the RSR look anyway. The Ruf trans based on the G50/50 is choice but seldom available, the old Ruf trans with the nose cone first is as antiquated as the stock four speed, Dr. Drew sold his here for a G50 conversion done at TurboKraft.

Hey Lincoln I recall your car's set up and glad you opted to update the intercooler. Yes TK is very capable for the gearbox conversions too. The common G50s seem to be going for $3500-4500 depending on condition and the G50-50s at least double and yes rare. This particular R50.50 is listed at $13500. Neat option to come along for someone.
