76 turbo dilemma
So I have a 1976 turbo I've owned for 20 years that I have made a bunch of modifications to ie steel slant fenders, 3.8 wing and intercooler, rear brake ducts, color change inside and out. Now I did keep all the origanal intierior and intake and even the pieces I cut out to make the rear ducts, but I don't have the front fenders or wing.
I guess my quetions is what does everyone think should I start a restoration back to stock. ![]() |

Might be cheaper just to buy another stock 930. Certainly easier.

might be cheeper to buy another 3.3 930 and sell yours. Another 3.0 930 might be harder to find/buy. Especially non altered

I like the modified look but when I did this I never thought about how rare the car is so now I have become the jack ass that cut up a low production car.

I say keep it as is. Who knows maybe in a few years the iconic mods people did to these cars will become coveted also.

Go back the work is not that great. Documented slants are ok but I suspect they too have a much reduced demand base.

76 930
Guess I am one of the jackasses that cut up a '76 930 too. My car was too far from original to ever be a collector grade car so the decision was not too diffictult. If you enjoy the car the way it is, leave it! You can collect the original parts you are missing as you come across them, so if you ever did want to go original you would have the parts.

It's definitely a person descion opinions vary. I just purchased a 76 Turbo Carrera not to heavily modified but have ever intention of returning it to stock. I'm interested in the preservation of a classic car!

You didn't say why you wanted to go back to stock. If you're looking to sell it, maybe, but the delta between what you could get as-is versus what you could get if it was stock, minus the costs to get it back to stock etc... You might get upside down quickly.
We're a biased, DIY group, but I would look at $10k of the right mods as $10k I now don't need to spend immediately after the purchase.

Agreed, and it doesn't look too far to bring back anyway.

The car is not for sale plus I really do love my slantnose so I should probabley leave it as is, I may start collecting parts to restore just in case values for early cars go crazy. clexton1 I love your car also and ment .no disrespect

Thats probably a great idea. I have "heard" that 76 - 77 early turbos are trading privately for six figures for exceptional cars. It is likely due to the rarity of the cars that at some time in the future, collectors will begin scooping them up to restore in the same vein as the early "s" cars. Either way, your car WILL be going up in value...

Clexton1, your car is awesome. As to some others, not to worry, many the original parts will surface as all of them were complete when they left the factory. You'd think they are probably getting dusty in some dark corner unless they were damaged by accident or salt. Some may even be being horded by some savvy person waiting for the demand to increase. Otherwise when found the lucky guy will probably be glad to resell for a great profit.
So I think most early modded ones can be returned to showroom stock if the market goes that way. I'll never do that to mine, especially to the mechanical part of restrictive components to comply to our ridicules standards and furthermore to keep it closer to the performance level to the original development of the group 4, 934, not put back to the configuration that evolved to the ones that were made for air conditioning, soft ride, and low HP. Stock ones are nice especially when compared to what else was being built at that time but they can be much improved for spirited pleasure use.

Personal opinion, but Porsches are toys. They aren't investments. Don't borrow to own one, and don't hope for appreciation. If they go up in value, great, but the value in the car should be in how much you enjoy it.
I have enjoyed my 951 and now 930 based on originality, but that's me. If you prefer a slantnose in bright yellow, more power to you. If an original 930 turns you on, then do that. A Porsche isn't about valuations. It's about the car.

I would collect the parts to return the OP's car to original so that is an option in 3-4 years when they are trading for what we consider 2.7RS money today.

Agreed, what's done is done. Keep/get the pieces to restore and do it when your done enjoying it. If not, someone will anyway.
