Turbo 914

In a previous thread Cole asked me to post about my turbo 914.

Well It's not a 930. And. Its not 911 based. But it is a Porsche. It does not have a flat six. It does have a flat four.

Twin turbo's make up for changes against the Marque.

So... Here is the build.

Subaru EJ20R JDM twin turbo.
98-99 Subaru GC8/Impreza 5sp transmission.
Custom cable shift running Nissan Versa shift column (amazing shifter placement)
Megasquirt EFI with custom tune based on STi Ver8 tables.
~1920# with close to 300HP. Yeah, take that.

Everything is garage built to comply with rules of the $2011 GRM Challenge. I went in 2011 and blew the motor so I finished dead last. I will go back this year and will have a whole year to sort the car. The new motor is running well. I plan to kick ass and take names this year.

There are several things I would love to do to change the build or add performance but I can not to stay within the budget and the rules.

Goes Fast... Scares Weak Minded People... Get's lots of compliments.... Handling? Well I have not explored the limits yet. TBD.

A few pictures for those who like a visual.

Ok, I'm looking at the right bank turbo.
I see a small canister with single nipple which I assume to be the wastegate. Next to that is a much larger canister. What is its function?
That CAC inlet needs a tall F1 type snorkle.

Marty,

The small canister is the integral wastegate. The large one is a vacuum diaphram that would "sequentially" open the exhaust cut-out on the second turbo and add boost. I have deactivated it by welding it in the open position and keeping both turbos to spool together.

Wow, sequential, I'm impressed. Are both turbos the same aero configuration?

Yes, they are both really small. probably close in total overall flow of a single turbo factory setup (TD04).

I know the system operates with pressure to open a butterfly valve in the exhaust. Most of the Subaru guys say to just leave it open permanently - and so I welded it open.

I thought about doing a Subi motor 914 if I ever get the current project done. I am also thinking about an Audi powered 2.7T mid engine 911 too..

Nice car and build!!!

Jamie, thanks for sharing :-)
In the box of weather I should boost my 914 or not :-)
As a turbo guy, that might be the way to go :-)

Care to share info on how you got the Subi trans to work cheaply in your car ???? I know of the pricey ring gear flip but hoped you had something better.
I have a JDM EJ20 to go into my 58 Karmann Ghia. I'd rather not use the built VW trans and have a 5th gear.
Thanks

There is no easy way to make the Subaru transmission work in the Ghia. Only a reverse ring and pinion will work. These are pricey.
