930 overhall...Need help!

Well, after many many many months of looking I finally got a 930. I won't go into that fiasco as I am happy the search is over. That said, I am looking to perform a light overall of the car to make it mine. It is an '86 with around 22k miles on it. It sat in a container (think shipping container) for nearly its entire life. The prior owner bought the car in 1987 with around 6k miles. It has a built motor that was done about 5 years ago.

The interior was very dirty but perfect, same for the exterior. I would give them an 8.5-9 out of 10.

That said, I thought I would start this thread with some pictures of parts that came with the car. I have no idea what they are.

Next, I was going to show some issues I have encountered and any help fixing them would be appreciated. I am a pretty good hack mechanic but I don't have a lift so I need to be pragmatic.

But first, a picture of the car.

Borla Exhaust

I was told this is a custom Borla exhaust. Does it look custom? It is a little rusty but is this normal and in good condition? Seems ok.

The parts are:

Smog pump with filter.

Spider for smog pump to pump air into exhaust port.

Rear wiper motor

And, finally a bypass valve. Since that is removed, check to see that the later style is installed. It is most likely on the rubber 90 degree bend on the front LH side of the engine compartment.

The exhaust system is stock, except for the muffler which looks to be aftermarket. It looks like letters stamped on it. If so, that should tell you more.

Looks like a nice car, more pictures please.

Congrats on your purchase. You've come to the right place for encouragement and advice.
Most of the pics you posted are of the air pump and injection system. Porsche used a belt driven air pump to blow extra air into the exhaust system to aid the catalytic converter burning off any unburned gas.

The other part appears to be your shuttle valve body. Does your car have an aftermarket intercooler?

Lastly, I would lose the rims ASAP and consider the same for the rockers. They look better on slants. Sorry for the unsolicited 0.02 but we're here to help.

Headers are stock for what came on an 86. sometimes called a "euro" exhaust because earlier US models differed than these. But after 86 they were the same everywhere.
Looks like an aftermarket muffler bolted onto the turbo.

That's why I love this forum! The rims are gone. I am just waiting for tires to show up this week and will reinstall the Fuchs. The rockers will most likely go as well. I just gotta see how many holes there are.

The car is running a Koklen intercooler and a Borla exhaust.

On the aesthetic note, my car came with Euro H4 converted lights with chrome headlight rings. Think I will send these out to get painted but is there a place that already sells just the rings painted? Most likely not which is no biggie.

Here is an interior picture after I cleaned it up. Still not finished.

Next issues are the oil leaks. Here they are:

I am assuming valve cover gaskets. The other is the same

This could be overflow from when people filled the car up with oil as this is located under the oil fill neck

This one worries me.

I am hoping that there is a gasket under that plate that has failed. This is the bottom of the tranny. The next leak is in front (car wise) of this leak

Just ahead of the previous leak

No clue:

No clue 2:

Both axles are a little wet where they meet the diff. Is this acceptable?

No longer needed smog sensor?

Get used to that look. That's there natural pose.
And your creeper looks new too. Mine looks like an old junk yard dog compared to that one.
You have some fun tinkering ahead. Some degreasing and steam cleaning should help ID the source of the various oil leaks. Renew all your fluids and filters, including brake fluid and flexible brake hoses, right away. Repack the front bearings and keep an ear out for the rear ones. Unfortunately, when these cars sit, the rear bearings tend to go and it is one of the tattoo-worthy jobs on these cars.

Nice car!
The muffler you seem to have would be the BORLA. If you look at one end, if it is one straight tube, it is the ''sport boy'' or something like that (quite loud), if there are a number of smaller tubes in it, but you still see through, it is the multicore muffler, I just installed the same. It is custom as it needs to be built in place, it is not a kit.

The car is quite loud and pops a bit. Sounds great. It does have a bit of trouble starting at first after sitting. Basically, it turns over fine but after the starter is off it kinda sputters a bit before catching and running. It also does this to a much lesser extent when you turn it off. Maybe 2 seconds it sputters off.

I am thinking this could be plugs, wires, distributor...Any other suggestions would be helpful.

And if anyone knows any of those leaks let me know!

Engine bay below:

IMHO ,painting the headlight trim rings ,especially on the red cars ,was a very bad decision on Porsche part. If you want to sell your headlight assembly to me ,send me a pm.

Ok. Finally got my PPI and these are the leaks. They said they were all pretty easy to fix but I always like a write-up before I get down and dirty to avoid any catastrophes. Here they are:

Level 2 transmission leak: Shift fork cover - shift shaft (they actually spelled it sheft shaft).

Valve covers: think these should be easy enough but I'll do a search...

T-stat to oil tank hose. Would love a little help here.

best thing to do is steam clean the engine very good to verify the source of leaks.
BTW, nice looking car even though it is red. and i just bouhgt one this year too. man what a night mare!! glad it is over. i have not been on the cars forsale section since.

if you dont mind. what did you pay? pm me if you dont want to.

i am going thru and fixing some of the small minor things. see my thread. my to do list.

i would go thru everything. check fuel pressures, do a compression test, a leak down test. if nothinig else just a baseline of the condition.

the bad thing is when these cars sit. you start to have lots of leaks and problems with fuel/system. the tanks rust, the FD gets clogged. lines get clogged/leak. i too think i have a small leak at the output shafts on the tranny. i cleaned it up and will check it once back on the road.

The leak under the transmission is a $5 gasket and a half hour work, plus transmission fluid refill. But before you replace the gasket, first make sure it not just a case of loose bolts on the inspection plate.

The issue here is the car has not had a valve adjustment since 2008 and should have one. However, to be totally honest, due to the limited access to the engine and the articles I have read I may want to farm this out. Once I do that my shop might as well do nearly all the work and this robs me of some of my fun (misery?).

I am on the fence with this one so if I feel nutty I may do it. If not, I will just do all the other things my car needs except these projects.

It looked like the valve cover nuts havn't been touched in a long time. Could be valve cover gasket oil leaks but the end of the rocker shafts can leak too and the blown around oil accumulation and collected dirt along the bottom edges of the cam towers will look the same either way.
The ends of the 12 rocker shafts are exposed to atmosphere and you can't see or touch them until the valve covers are off.
You should adjust the valves yourself, it's not that hard unless you have a sore back and shops charge a lot for that.
You change the oil at the same time.

You have lots of degreasing and cleaning under the car before you'll be able to really tell where the different oil leaks are coming from.
