floating rotor issue ?

hey all

79 930

I was checking my brake lines since I recently rebuilt my calipers, replaced bearings etc (4 months ago) and noticed that I have a bit of play with my rotors. when I move them back and forth.. Knowing they are floating are they suppose to have a bit of play..

do not recall them moving back and forth prior..but that could have been all the build up and corrosive bs that we pick up...I torqued them to spec and replaced the bolt locking stuff..

The other side does not move

New rotors are Zimmermans

Moves about 1/8 give or take...Enough to hear a sound when I move them back and forth

Thanks

Normal for the 78-79 floaters. When I changed mine a couple years back, there was so much dirt and corrosion on the aluminum hats, the rotors were no longing floating. When I installed the new ones I cleaned everything up, and now they float noticeably. I will say that they make a huge racket going down the road. So much, that when I install the next set of rotors, I may flip the backing plate so they don't float. Here's a link to my thread on floating rotor replacement and some photos that illustrate what I am referring to re: the backing plate:

FYI, 930s since the 80s.. Always floating rotors on front with very little noise issues. I currently run floating Big Reds on my 930.. with no issues. The stockers I removed were also relatively quiet. I wonder if a lot of it is modded bits and corrosion? Mine stay relative clean.
