Blkbird lives!
My precious Blkbird has close to 100,000 miles on her and the other day she suddenly decided to start blowing white smoke at idle. Not just a little white smoke, no, a lot of white smoke. Think hiding the car from prying eyes smoke screen.
After a few calls and gathering of opinions, I took Blkbird to Graham Everett Motorsports adjacent to Road Atlanta. After all, the guy owns a 930 so he must know old turbos. Well, it turns out he sure does. The white smoke was coming from the modified K27-7200 turbo. Apparently it was so fouled that it was a wonder it actually spun. But... we also discovered the rockers were badly worn and the valve guides kind of shot. No wonder it felt like I was towing a load of cinder blocks before. So we decided to give the engine a full refresh.
Just got the car back today so I'm trying to be gentle. But holy bat poop she sure hauls bootie! And that new RarlyL8 exhaust is everything I'd hoped and heard it would be. Watch out for future updates, and hopefully no speeding tickets. Special thanks to Brian and Graham for all their work and efforts. Very nice! ![]()

Did you regrind your 930 cams to 964, or did you fit 964 cams - looking at same process. very optimistic after your posting.
Thanks Alan

How fantastic to have basically a new engine at 100K miles and get ready for the next 100K. I'll look for you flying by with the top down on 400 next time I'm down there!

My car has 66,000 and runs great so any engine rebuild is (hopefully) way down the road. However, I'm curious as to ball park cost for the rebuild you did.
Thanks! |

Just south of $10k.
But my rockers were shot and the cam needed replacing. And of course while the engine is out is the perfect time for a clutch. And while the heads are off lets check the cylinders & pistons, then hone them for a refresh. You get the idea. One thing just naturally progressed to the next... CH ![]()

Tough audience!
I'll take some snaps after I finish filling in the holes left in the rear valence from the old exhaust. I used to run a dual outlet GHL but I'm fond of the center exhaust look. Anybody want to buy a gently used GHL? Only used on Sundays to get to church, CH

They can be installed if you have the tools and enough enthusiasm to do a partial top tear down = cam timing etc. Engine out job really - not worth trying to leave it in.
The issue is if they are straight 964 cams they will need a bit of modification first because the 930 drives the scavenge pump of the LH cam and the 964 doesn't have this fitting. (Hope I'm right on this - going thru same exercise). Alan

Charles,
Went back to short dump pipe under the car. Just need to splatter weld in some sheet metal and then replace the valence. That or RarlyL8 has a fiberglass replacement part that is tempting.
