Help ROW '78 distributor setting
Like to check the timing on my distributor.
The vac pot doesn't work anymore (again!!) can someone tell me what setting I need at 4000 rpm (vac disconected)? I have a 30 mark? Most are 29°? No? Have been searching threads. I'm having 964 cams, WMI , muffler and headers I need a safe setting. No need to gain more power here. Thanks! ![]() ![]() Last edited by klefroid; 07-02-2014 at 11:52 AM.. |

Don't want to blow up piston rings and so on...
Just need little advice where to set the distributor @ 4000 rpm? Do I set it on the 10 mark or the 30? (I got the flash light thing) A lot of stuf to read for US cars but much less on the ROW ... Thanks in advance! Last edited by klefroid; 07-02-2014 at 05:29 PM.. |

I always set them at 26°BTDC @ 4000RPM. If you live in a cool climate, use high octane fuel, or have a huge intercooler then higher is safe.

Just wanted to be sure you were considering this in the response. I mostly here guys running less than 22 BTDC at 0.8bar from posts I been reading here on the board. But those numbers are all hard to come by. Fred

There is no boost retard on a Euro distributor so yes 26° is what you see on boost.

Mine is 29 degrees at 4000 according to my manual , mine is a euro 3.0 though
But having upgrades on the engine will it change the (usual factory setting location?? because your engines dynamics have changed. A question ive often thought about

I've got the manual back. The factory setting is indeed 29° at 4000
The vacuum pot works again and rotor advance also. Het to remove the rotor and drop in a bit op oil inside the shaft. I notice much more power at morning and evening as the temps are cooler. Need to mount my bigger IC soon! First time my wife is happy with the Porsche, no oil leaks anymore ![]() only issue I got right now is to rich between 4000 and 5000 rpm. Goes under 10! |

Yes the spec is 29°, however Euro 930 engines ran on a different blended gasoline in 1978 Europe than they do today in the US which is why I set them at 26°. At that setting you can run without issue on 89 octane with 10% ethanol blend using stock boost with stock intercooler.
