Broken head stud symptoms.
I have low compression in number 5 cylinder, 3L 930. Suspect it is a burnt valve from lack of maintenance/valve clearances. Have not had the time to make a pressure tester yet. This would give me better clues if I could find the time......
Have started to wonder recently if a broken stud would give low compression... without the leak making significant noise when running or under load? I tend to think I would hear a leak of that sort? Saving for a complete engine rebuild and my mind wonders when thinking about what I may find inside. Anybody had real world symptoms of broken head studs they can share? I have searched with not much luck. |

Yes, a broken stud could lose compression.......among other things.

Finding head nuts in the valve covers when doing a valve adjustment is the sure fire symptom. Take a magnet and pull on every head nut when you have the valve covers off. If any are loose... Broken head stud.

Have the studs ever been changed? If not, way likely. They all brake eventually.

My broken head stud sounded like Pop Pop Pop through the exhaust system. not like a back fire just a pop when under boost. Cant miss it. Normaly there is no noise except the regular exhaust note. If you hear a pop under boost you have a broken head stud or two.
