Fake Brembo's floating around.

Quote:
Just got word that some shady Chinese company are actually making counterfeit Brembo and AP Racing brake kits. From just the looks of it, there’s little to tell apart from the originals and the counterfeits. Price wise, the counterfeit brakes are just one third the price of the real deal.

Posted Image

What we can gather from the news site is that the whole operation isn’t as shady as you would imagine, as the makers of these imitation brakes actually has a showroom, warehouse and a workshop! The shop owner, known as Chen, mentions that the brakes are even used in some Macau races. Even more worryingly, Chen has claimed that he has exported quite a number of these counterfeit brakes to Malaysia. The reporter has also noted that the warehouse has stocked a lot of these counterfeit brake calipers and disc rotors, which they suspect might be for wholesale purposes.

Chen does not counterfeit only Brembo, as he claims that he also produces AP Racing brakes and other well known brakes. Several experts has voiced their concerns over these fake brake kits, as using imitation brake kits can cause fatal accidents, since they do not stand up to the strict quality control Brembo and other manufacturers impose.

So guys, if you do happen to come across some brand new, but dubiously cheap Brembo brakes, please proceed with extreme caution, as these counterfeit brakes do not perform like how the originals should. The car’s braking system should not be taken lightly, as this is a matter of life and death.

Thanks for the info. This is one of the faults when a company goes into Global Manufacturing. There really is no real way to secure your manufacturing practices. Too many companies have chosen to mfr in China only to have their practices copied by other phony manufacturers. Brembo and AP Racing are not the only ones. Another downfall is when the contract with a manufacturing company in China expires..what truly stops them from manufacturing your item other than legal actions that may take a few years to resolve.

I hope Brembo and AP Racing are successful at shutting down the outfit. For now I will keep my originals that seem to work very well..

I doubt Brembo will have any chance of shutting down the outfit. We just need to watch our supply chains and hopefully Brembo will put out some definitive info like weight difference to accurately identify.

And it's doubtful someone in China who crashes will blow the whistle either. Remember the tainted milk scandal? 74,000 Chinese kids most under 2yrs old got sick by official govt statistics and then they stopped tracking it. One of the three people executed in connection to this was the Chinese whistleblower who was mysteriously stabbed to death.

In light of this fake Brembo company has a bright future.

With large scale manufacturing and the global economy, he might be making the real ones and exporting them back to the EU for final inspections and QC.

There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply.
The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey.

I had no appreciation for just how dire this situation was until a friend had a "new" 35" BFG Mud Terrain decompose itself at 70mph after being mounted on his jeep that morning. It's truly shocking what will be readily counterfeited.

But what if these Brembos are equal or better quality?
Would we buy them then?

I would

I seriously doubt they are of equal quality. I wouldn't be willing to take any chances on the track until they are proven to be equal.

I for one would run them if they were good quality, I just wouldnt want the brembo logo on there. I have gotten lots of stuff from china for my cars and bikes and have generally been very impressed.

Brembo- http://www.brembo.com/en/Contatti/Pages/default.aspx

Any large company has a fraud/investigation division. If there is a tip and worthwhile they will bite.(I'm sure Brembo(Italians are aware of this for a long time)
Now, you are dealing with China. Most likely BREMBO-REPS will be arrested if they get a little to smart in China and they have to make a nice donation to them $$$ for freedom...

Best bet-is following the manifest. The problem is that the purchase order will say generic brakes. It will not state Brembo. If we (US CUSTOMS) have a good lead/intel we would have to get down and dirty and start ripping apart boxes.. etc...etc..

Then we get the clowns/individuals fine them..etc..etc...
There are times they just disappear and leave the merchandise. They will get a new tax ID # Monday morning and set up shop again.

Warning- You are taking a chance with these products especially brakes.. Why risk your life or someone in the car with you... We are not kids anymore.. Do the right thing- Buy the real stuff. Period.

How about when somebody starts producing counterfeit ARP fasteners or high end connecting rods of sub quality for these engines. It sure could end up costing a lot more than counterfeit Brembo's.

Just a thought,
Jim
