What makes a 930 so special???
I know we love these cars and yes I have one, but I've been doing a lot of research and there are no threads about this subject and I'm curious what makes these so special to you or in general?
Thanks in advance!

What makes any classic sports car special to those that covet them? Same answer here. Primary reason? You can't buy a new one
To some, its an old, archaically turbo'd 911. To others, its the holy grail and the epitome of Porsche. And in the long timespan they were made, opinions can range from no thanks, to gotta-have-it |

Its a machine that's older than I am, but doesnt appear dated in any way. It's spit-dryingly fast, handles and brakes like a new supercar, and when you give it gas it just wants to go even harder. You can drive it to the grocery and the track on the same day(when time permits of course), and every boy dreams of one, and every grown man does too.

As to why we love these cars, I think this sums it up for me: "its the holy grail and the epitome of Porsche". End of story.

That's taking it a bit too far IMO. A well driven 930 can hang with some not so well driven new supercars...with equal drivers, no way. The brakes on the 930 are pretty damn good, but the effort to make them work is high. My wife's Mini Cooper S with the John Cooper Works package (big ass Brembos in front) has brakes that will pop your eyeballs out with minimal pedal effort. The Mini is modern, but it's not even a supercar.
I love my 930 as much as anyone, but let's be real. See if you can keep up with a Mclaren MP4 12C...

![]() doesn't mean they aren't amazing, they are, but they are not modern car good, nor are they current supercar fast....and in those distinctions, lays their unique appeal |

In 1976, I was a nineteen year old Marine in a typically dirty barber shop in Olongapo, Philippines. Pinned to the wall was a poster of the coolest car I'd ever seen ... the new Porsche 911 Turbo. T`was the proverbial love at first site. The original 911 Turbo is, I believe inarguably, the iconic German supercar; successfully built to take down the Italians. Combine that amazing performance with the most sensual lines ever conceived by an automobile designer and you get the Porsche 930. Let `em breath, give `em some modern fuel and ignition management and they're still quite capable of taking down most anything out there. Yet they're not at all high-strung; hand the keys to the War Department and she can drive this docile little car without ever knowing what lies beneath. Try that with any other exotic. They're very DIY-able and offer daily driver reliability - something else I defy you to try with any other exotic.
What's not to love?

A supercar in its time and still a super car to own today. Nothing else like one. Wish I didn't sell mine!

Iconic sports car, no nannies, air cooled, "the smell", the feel driving one, true racing heritage. Steve McQueen had a slate gray 76 930, he drove daily the last years of his life, his all time favorite sports car.

The 930 is one of a special handful of Porsche cars that will forever be know as having an unaltered link between Race-Way and Road-Way.
Ohhhh, and that race-car smell from a bit of high-octane leaded coming from an early 930, Priceless!!! Love the Lag. Bud ![]() .

They're slow, handle like crap and as reliable as a Yugo.
But dat azz is the sexiest look of any car ever designed. I swear Porsche is the only car designer that pays attention to the rear end. Mmmm Lol |

The 911 has been one of the best-looking sportscar designs of all time. That's partly why it's been in production for 50 years. Performance aside, we're all suckers for good design, and the 930 is one of the most ridiculously sexy variants of the 911. When you add in the then-phenomenal performance of the car, its day-to-day drivability and reliability, the car's original role in serving as a homologation special for the factory's 934/935 racing efforts, and the fact that it's still a thrill to drive 3 decades later--those are the reasons the car is special. And c'mon, the car still looks bad-a** after all these years.

the placeholder the 930 has in sports car racing history is magnificent. to me, the race legacy and the unrivaled winning record the turbo holds...the way the rules were modified to curtail the dominance is what speaks to me and makes the 930 so special. I am a car lover and have had many cool cars...the 930 is the car that defines me as a car guy and as a racer!!! happy new year you lucky turbo owners!!!!!! best, pcb |

The One
I love the way the early 930 shows the friendliness and simplicity of its Volkswagon heratage and the hidden agressivenes of the 934/935. It's like the girl you shouldn't have let get away but now she is in your garage and you can go out anytime you like; you love looking at her and being with her.
