Windshield Wiper Problem

Ok, so I know I am taxing the group with a few of my electrical gremlins, but here is one more (I promise this is the last one - for the moment!!)

My windshield wipers some times just start wiping on their own and will not shut off unless I pull the fuse. Then I can replace the fuse and life is normal again.

I have a new stalk and the intermittent wiper switch (on dash) is working fine (on and off with varying speeds working).

Is there a relay behind the heating system? Anybody have a wiper schematic?

Thanks,
Henry

If it's the same as my 79SC yes there is a relay conveniently located ( just kidding......it's a SOB to get to it) behind the fresh air plenum. Takes about an hour to get to it.

So this is still happening with the new wiper switch installed?

You can usually reach that relay much easier by pulling the two left most instruments out of the dash. You can gently let the instruments hang down from their wires so you can see in there with a flashlight and reach in through the other hole.

Interesting problem ... My 86 930 recently started acting strange too. Every time I start the car the windshield wipers go on for 3 cycles. At the same time I started experiencing no-start issues. I replaced the electrical portion of the ignition and the wipers stopped their auto on feature, then it started again! These cars really keep you on your toes.

I know the wipers relays are susceptible to EMF. I had a CB radio plugged into my cigarette lighter and when I checked the Mic the wipers would go off! I think the cig lighter and the wipers might share a connection on the fuse panel not sure anymore, but the EMF from the CB would feedback thru the cig lighter and kick off the wiper motor.

Is something plugged into your cig lighter that might be causing this?

yes the problem is intermittent. sometimes I will start the car and the wipers will start wiping. weird. The stick is off, the intermittent switch on the dash is off. Ok, get out, pull the fuse, shut them off. Shut the car off, replace the fuse and they are sitting still.

Nothing is plugged into the lighter outlet. New stick. guess I need to investigate the fuse assembly more. or the relay, but that is just for the intermittent function.

Ugh, 38 year old beasts!!

At NHMS on Tuesday!!!
