kendall 20/50?
I'm at a loss again guys. I'm sorry to do this but what oil for my turbo!!
I've been using truck oil but it only comes in 15/40 and I need some girth. I feel like I'm leaking too much oil. Should I go back to mobile 20/50 v-twin$? What do you use? I like to change my oil often but I'm not rich.

I run Amsoil in everything I own. Here's what's in the 930. Fully synthetic and lots of zinc and phosphorus
AMSOIL DOMINATOR® 15W-50 Racing Oil http://www.amsoil.com/techservicesbulletin/motoroil/tsb%20mo-2007-08-08%20flat%20tappet.pdf

To be clear: you want thicker oil to stop leaks? Seems by that theory you wish to raise the cold oil weight? Where is the oil leaking from?
I used kendall 20w50 when I first got the 930 but found coked oil in my oil filter. No coke with rotella t6 5w40 (synthetic). I used dino vr1 20w50 for last 2 years (recommended on this forum), got coking in turbo so will now be sticking with synthetic. I find the 20w50 oil doesn't like starting in the winter, engine is really sluggish for a few minutes until the oil warmed. Last weekend I switched to mobile 1 0w40. $25 for 5 gallons at walmart. I'll use it at least for the winter. Leaks are actually down a little from the vr1 20w50 but that may be due to the new silicon valve covers. Not sure what I'll use in the spring. I also want something inexpensive and good. |

I'm in vegas so it doesn't get super cold.
My engine has a leak at the no 8 bearring among other smaller spots. I may want to go synthetic but at the intervals and as much as I like to drive my car it's almost as bad as owning a ferrari to maintain! I'm using a water cooled jacket on my turbo with flow after shutdown so HA! Doubtfull I'll get coking(I hope). Amsoil is more expensive that mobile vtwin is it not? I'm just searching for a happy medium.

Yeah amsoil is on the expensive side. You can buy a wholesale membership then its a little cheaper, but even then its about even with the mobil 1. Great oil though. Is there a reason you like to change it so often?

I'd say I change it at 2500 mile intervals with dino but still not much more that 3000miles for synthetic. Just to keep it fresh as I can. It's probably overkill but I drive it a lot when It's up and going. I'm just getting it back up now after some bodywork and interior work. I'm a little uncomfortable with this issue, it's like saying I don't really have a family Dr. to speak of. "What oil you use?" Ummmmm, well....... rotella I guess right now....but ummm.....

I used Kendall 20-50 for years... it became hard to find, so I changed to Mobil1 15-50 may be 15 yrs ago = no problems at all. Brad Penn 20-50 is good stuff but I leave that for the 356.

You can get both kendall and brad penn at amazon for pretty reasonable prices. I actually got a case of brad penn for my car, but then I decided to stick with synthetic. If my car didnt run an oil cooled ball bearing turbo I would have used it. They all seem to have good zinc and phosphorus numbers which is what I primarily look for.

Amsoil is pretty far behind the technology curve at this point. The main players spend a lot to stay ahead.
Mobil 1 and Rotella T6 have about the same ZDDP, and the diesel oil does not have the high rev anti foming additives as an automotive oil. Go full syn. Using 20W50 is fine down to 30F (-1 C). |

Had a lot of wear problems with the brad Pitt Sean penn stuff. Quit using it and went 15-50 Mobil one from the "mart" price is excellent and no wear problems at all. I use the rosella 5-40 Dino for break in and all is good

Kendall 20/50 for years now, not a single issue. I have put over 65K miles on my 930 and always Kendall.
