Yeah, I figured it was a long-shot since its been at least a decade and half, since they offered the body kit and/or front fenders with the fixed lights. Oh well!

even tough I have not done much on the 930 I have been very busy over the winter.

finally got the 928 brakes fixed by replacing everything incl MC. started due to right rear dragging, long story. now in process of complete rebuild of the AC system.

thought I had the 951 ready for DE in march but decided to find the source of a small coolant leak. found what I was afraid of, head gasket.

after breaking bolts and fighting the head off the 951 find cyl 2 is badly scoured. now have that engine out looking for a good short block to rebuild.

but back to this project. after searching for the past couple years I finally bought a short bell housing 930 gearbox. the PO had removed the gearbox stub axles and installed in a different 930 gearbox. in process of finding a set.

but by mistake I bought a set of the banana arm 930 stub axles. well probably need them too.

question for this forum. if I get proper gearbox and banana arm 930 stub axles, get a set of 930 axles to match? I have a set of carerra 3.2 axles. remember this is an SC tub. got an email off to my mentor Steve Weiner about this. I have already refurbed the banana arms and installed new wheel bearings.

and got an email Steve is about to start the work on my case, heads, etc.:D

Shaun at tru-6 has finished cerakoting my fan/housing and oil tank, along with all the replating. will be shipping all tomorrow.

so what's next? get the rotisserie from my friend and get the shell mounted so we can drag it out to the side lot and media blast it and the primer the tub.

I am getting excited that this jig saw puzzle is starting to come together.

and my friend moved into the other portion of the shop in Jan. he is a mercedes trained mechanic, mainly/prefers to work on older MB.

and had the 928buckeyelandsharks 928 club come to the shop, kabitz a while then lunch at the Ludlow/Bromley Yacht club across the street.

in case you are not familiar with 928s, nickname is 'shark' LBYC has a big great white shark on posts in from.

got the 930 gearbox yesterday, and the flange axles are on the way.

and heard Steve is starting work on all my engine stuff I sent him to refresh.

but in the short term working on cleaning the head/cam tower to be ready to rebuild the 951 engine when I find a good block.

911tracker85 08-09-2019 05:06 AM

got tired of waiting for my friend's rotisserie.... so got one.

now need to determine how to mount the tub to it.

suggestions?

searched and found several threads about mounting on rotisserie. several use the bumper shock tubes.

so sat down and looked and measured and came up with this.

found a heavy pipe that would just fit inside the support beams. a bit smaller than the shock tube so wrapped in some heavy rubber.

hope to get it in the air today. :D

now the real fun begins....

first to scrape the stuff of the inside floor boards before hauling out to the side lot to blast clean. thinking I'll use paint remove on the body panels first. then only need a very light touch with the blasting to completely clean with reduced risk of warping anything.

Should end up an awesome project I'll be looking forward to watching

dap930 08-19-2019 11:57 AM

Bob,

Are you trying to leave the galvanized surface intact, or just blast it off? Of course the galvanize layer would be gone where any fender flare or slantnose fender mods were done.

911tracker85 08-20-2019 08:08 AM

good question. I guess if I blast to metal it will probably affect the galvanize. I plan to use chem remover on the body panels. don't know what I'll find on the rear flares, they are welded metal. and dont know if the Golden Coachworks aftermarket front slope fenders were galvanized.

dap930 08-20-2019 10:00 AM

Bob,

No, the Golden Coachworks panels were not galvanized. Also had to grind the galvanize off along the weld line for good welds. I saved all the galvanize coating I could when I painted my car, just make sure to use an etching primer for those areas.

911tracker85 09-03-2019 05:46 AM

got the sound deadening stuff off the floors. not as hard as I feared. most came off using a putty knife and only had to use the heat gun on the area by the left foot rest area.

so go over it and cover up a few things like the steering column and get ready to blast.

Man, this project started slow but now you're really up to full steam.
Great write ups and very interesting. Keep up the good work and even though a lot of us don't reply much, there are a bunch of people following this thread so please keep on updating.
Thanks
Tony

Tony,
thanks!

the problem has always been I had too many cars / projects when I bought this one....

been looking it over to identify what areas I will tape to keep sand out.

hit another speed bump on my 951 track car. got another engine and opened it up only to find cyl scouring. the guy from whom I got it has others and will swap out, but wants to open them up find a good one before I come swap out the bad block.

I bought a 87 924S intending to pull that engine to use the block. but after is sitting for a couple years it started! so found the other engine to use and will try to resurrect this turd too.

so in the short term, finally helping a friend resurrect his 84 944. got it running, bad fuel pump relay AND corroded fuel pump fuse. we're rebuilding the brakes, new brake lines, replace engine bay fuel lines, and all fluids. hope to get it back on the street by end of next week.

next step on the 930, drag it out to the side lot and blast it.

friend's project, wish I had taken pics of the goo we found in the brake calipers. but pistons good so rebuilding

my 924S project. nickname 'the creature from the black lagoon' and sometimes 'The Turd'.

auto trans with bad flex plate. plan to fix and gut into another track car... I just could not believe it when I started.
