G50 clutch not disengaging...help?

Guys,

Some of you might recall..I have a 86' 930 fully built by Peter Dawe, including G50 conversion. Well....everything basically new (6K miles on Eng and Trans) and I just experienced some strange clutch issues this weekend...never had a problem ever.

Sat morning - went for drive....couldn't get the car in gear (clutch fully depressed). So, I shut car off, restarted, and no problems. Drove for about an hour or so. (thought it was a fluke or pressure plate stuck on flywheel, as I washed car night before).

This morning, I took my son for a drive......drove for about 30min, parked for coffee. When I came out and restarted, I could not get car in gear (at all). Fortunately, I was on a hill, and rev/sync'd into 2nd gear and made it home - barely. On the highway, I would occasionally press the clutch several times, and could feel it and see rpm's spike occasionally disengage, when I did.

Finally, I put the car on the lift and had my wife press the clutch...I could see the throughout arm functioning properly (inspection plate), no leaks (at slave or master cyl) and everything looked fine. I re-bled just to be certain, and no air in the line.

I'm thinking something internal has broken (t/o bearing or pressure plate failure). I've ruled out a "sticking" flywheel/p.plate, slave or master cyl, air in the lines, etc......the clutch is a KEP and has low miles on it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Frank

Were you running an aftermarket PP? I have heard of the case shearing where the clutch fork is mounted.

Can you pump the clutch peddle a few times and have it work? Might need a bleed or have a bad master/slave.

Thanks for replies.....

Pumping doesn't seem to make a difference....clutch pedal feel normal. If my wife depresses clutch, I can see throughout fork moving back in forth in the tranny (inspection plate) - so I'm ruling out bleeding (I did anyway) or a faulty master cyl.

I'm scared it might be the fork mounts, as the links shows

Problem Solved!

So, I inspected (via inspection plate - on my lift) the clutch fork, slave plunger travel, and confirmed everything looked fine (good travel, no cracked bosses, pp was moving in /out, etc.). I even sent a video to Roger (helpful) at California Motorsports to confirm.

In a last ditch effort, as I was preparing the garage and my tools for an emergency engine drop (thinking it had to be inside the clutch) - I decided to rebleed one more time. This time, I let it bleed for 20-30 sec to be certain the fluid was new and no air. Note: i was thorough the 1st time the day before......Eureka, the clutch and shifting was back to normal and silky smooth!

After a long ride to confirm all was well, I put the car back on the lift and had my wife depress the clutch to inspect clutch fork travel - I could see now the fork actually was partially beyond the inspection plate housing (toward rear of car). This extra 1/4- 3/8 " travel made all the difference.

I'm thrilled to have an easy fix .......still not sure how air got into the line (no leaks, 3yr old master/slave cylinders, etc.). My only thought was the fluid level, which was hard to see w/o holding flashlight on the plastic, fell below the pickup in the reservoir and sucked up some air.

Moral of the story - bleed, bleed, and bleed again... before you drop!

Thanks fellas for your input.
