Starting my exhaust work...
Just dug into my car after my cracked exhaust in this thread last week...
B&B Exhaust problem Anyways this is a lot of fun! It seems like I have a lot of gaskets that need replacing as well. Was even considering pulling the whole motor while I'm at it to address some leaks tho I'd rather pull the motor over the winter. Here's a couple pics. I called it a night after dropping the muffler. I sprayed all the header studs with WD40 so hopefully they will come off ok next time I'm working on it again. They are quite rusty tho. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks like alot of rusty water was being blown out those crusty turbo gaskets! I'm sure this didn't help make power.
Also can anyone recommend a good set of new header bolts/studs? Mine are rusted badly.

You have a twisted idea of fun. I hate messing with crusty exhaust stuff.

OK, thanks!
It is fun, I just hope I can get everything put back together OK. The PO seems to have made his own inner bumper and heat shields. The heat was actually melting the backside of the 964 reflector close to the turbo! I'm going to try and tidy up that whole area.

Chris, just to offer some un-asked-for advice on penetrating oil, WD40 is not up to the task of rusty exhaust components - Kroil (Aerokroil is the spray can version of it) if much better stuff.

If u can find an old Skool pump oil can add half acetone snd half Trans fluid. Best break free on the planet. See here

^^ cool thanks for the tip!
BTW if I get my B&B headers welded up where the crack is, is the much value to them if I were to try and sell them? $500, $1000?

Damn I can't seem to get the exhaust nuts off the studs. Can't get at them with enough space to turn a wrench. Is there a special tool required?

We actually got the nuts all off tonight using mostly a flexible brake line wrench and a torch to heat the nuts. A pain in the arse but it's mostly completed at this point now.
![]() Is it recommended to replace studs at this time?

So I now have my entire exhaust system off and the whole system looks pretty good it seems the cracks just came as a result of the one hanger breaking and the weight of the waste gate on the pipe. There are no other signs of cracking anywhere else that I can see.
Can anyone tell me what I should look for on the turbo to see if its worn out? It feels like there is a very tiny amount of end play on the turbine wheel. I'm not sure if thats normal or what would be considered excessive? I suppose i'd have to physically measure that play to have an accurate figure. I'm not sure I have the tools to do so at the moment.

My oxygen sensor has seen better days but my AFR meter works fine so is there much point in replacing it?

I'd consider the O2 sensor a while-you-are-in-there item...

Pieces of steel have broken off of it. They went through the exhaust turbine wheel then. There's probably damage to the turbine wheel you don't know about now.
Yeah, I would say replace it and hope that doesn't happen again. I wonder if Chris at Turbokraft has seen this happen before. |

I have a turbo with a large hole where the impeller use to be. It simply exploded when the entire tip of the O2 sensor broke off and went through it. They didn't know what happened until the O2 sensor was removed, so yes get a new one.
