Interesting failure mode on rear window wiper - fixed
Rear window wiper on my 86 quit working. Every now and again it would shuffle a few inches, but basically kaput. ****ty death!!
Put my hand on the motor housing, it was hot. Pulled off the case, the spring that holds the brushes to the motor was glowing. Looking at the diag I see that if the brushes come off the motor then the spring rustles 12v worth of electrons straight to ground. The spring was elongated and very unspringy as a result of the heat. Replaced with a new spring, same issue. Replaced it with a Viton o-ring, all is again happy in the land of rear window wiper washering. Does Haggerty now call my car "modified"? Will it loose value at Pebble Beach? |

Open the case of the motor by flipping to one side or the other the spring that clips over the top of the housing. Then remove the case. You might need to wiggle it a bit.
Have a gander at it and you'll see what I mean. Once open, you will clearly see the motor armature, and two arms which pivot at one end, and which have brushes on and ride on the commutator. The ends of these arms are hooked. There is a small spring which is hooked over these two arms and is supposed to ensure the brushes ride the commutator. If yours is having the same problem the spring is likely very loose and/or elongated. Try turning on the wiper, does the spring glow? Remove the old spring with needle nose pliers and find an o-ring of sufficient diameter to stretch over the hooked arms and pop that in its place. Sorry no pics. |
