Engine Position

I’m in the process of my RUF Resurrection and have run into a snag. My engine seems to sit too far back in the engine bay as evident by the engine mounting bar having a slight rearward bow to it. This sitting “”too far back” results in the engine sitting too high in the engine bay. The intercooler will not fit under the tail as it hits the tail when the lid is closed. When I remove the intercooler, tail and turbo deck lid and install a standard deck lid it hits the alternator fan housing and will not close either. I have RUF 5spd transaxle and it’s mounted in the forward most chassis tranny mount holes. Not much I can do to move the engine assy forward, though I could lower the engine in the bay by getting longer than standard engine mount mounting bolts (factory bolts are 95mm long) though I’m not sure this is the answer as I’ll lose some ground clearance. Am I missing something here? Are there reference dimensions available to verify if the engine in fact sitting too far back and high?? Clear as mud??

Thanks for the help!!

Bill, I just took some precise measurements of those two spots, and the height (pic #1) is 108mm and the distance from the back (pic #2) is 82mm. My car is a 1987 and the engine and gearbox are in their original locations.

The Ruf 5spd should not be causing you and issue as they were direct fit. From your pics its really hard to tell if there is anything abnormal.. although it doesn't look like it.
Using longer bolts is not the answer, as it the engine would then be riding on the bolt/threads and not snug against the washer/mounts.

In some cases/cars the cross bar does show a slight backwards bow.. nothing exaggerated however.

What intercooler are you using? And wen using a standard decklid, is It properly shimmed, and are you sure its touching the fan housing or is it touching the strap/bolt which is moveable to a different position?

Ronnie's measurements are spot on..

Engine carrier Location?

Hi Bill,

I'm not sure from the pics but... It looks like you have the engine carrier mounted on top of the engine mounts. The Carrier should mount under the engine mounts, at least it does on my '76 930 and the other 911s I've worked on.

Hope this helps,

Rahl

Man, you must have some kinda resolution cause I clearly couldn't see that from the photo However, if that is the case then surely the problem.

EDIT; I just looked at the pics again. What I thought was your carrier is probably the rear panel of the engine bay. Could it be that the engine carrier is mounted turned around and or upside down? Just a thought...

Ronnie's.930: Thanks for the info, very helpful. My dims are 114.5mm and 83mm, so the engine is 6.5 mm, 0.25") high and 1mm fwd.

Onboost: I'm fairly confident that the engine carrier is assembled correctly. If I used longer bolts, I'd add a 1/4"spacer though I'm still hesitant to do this. The intercooler is a 964 style. The standard deck lid was properly shimmed. It hits the fan housing not the strap.

35611930: The engine carrier is mounted under the engine mounts (I hope it never ends up on top of the mounts.......). It is mounted with the small flange on the top and facing rear ward.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bill,

Really interesting problem there. Based on the pics and your description, the engine support bar, and so forth, is mounted correctly (pretty much idiot proof anyway - can only really go one one way that is even close to correct). Also, the 1mm too far forward isn't going to affect the height that much . . . in other words, even if you were able to move the engine rearward by 1mm, no way would that result in lowered by 6.5mm (no doubt you've already though this). I wonder if the welded on bushings at the ends of the support bar, are standard "length" or perhaps they were modified/ground down at some point (thus bringing the engine up higher - don't know why someone would do that unless the car that bar was used on was set up for rally work)?

[QUOTE=brcorp; 35611930: It is mounted with the small flange on the top and facing rear ward.

By "facing rear ward" do you mean facing the rear of the car or the front? Sorry for being anal ... but my flange is on top and facing (the opening) the front of the car. This puts the flange resting on the adjacent plate; I assume that this takes the load and vibration off of the bolts. This is an early turbo so the carrier plates may be different.

How did you get it in there like that???

Check that the mount is right side up and as mentioned, it goes under the motor mounts and body...

Yeah baby! Like a magic frog swimming through my colon...

Sometimes I think my engine mount is bent...had trouble getting the nuts and bolt to line up last time...used my monkey grip to slap them in...

Thanks Ronnie and Fritz for the dimensions. Everything is with in spec and assembled correctly. I just needed to massage the intercooler and the fiberglass/tail installation.
