anyone else going to this event? I just registered, and it would be great to see some other air cooled cars burning up the track!

You'll get embarrassed by modern iron. These days to be competitive in the amateur ranks you need 1000HP. Cars hit 200mph in the 1/2 mile.

1000 is a minimum these days, not really even impressive. Crazy stuff, I'd love to watch that.

Rollin' coal. That's what I say... Seeing cars hit 200+ in the 1/2 is very typical now. Crazy actually.
Case in point... This car's motor was making over 3000whp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mra8qci0Oek That car was running a TH400 believe it or not... Crazy. - Chris.

yeah, i have spectated the past few years. There are some badass rides out there. I won't really be "competing" Per say, but just wanted to see what the car would run in the 1/2. Probably make a few fun runs, then spectate the rest of the day. Would like to see atleast 145mph, but i'm not really sure.

You should be able to do 145mph depending on your gearing. My old Red Rocket with the 915 topped out at 145mph@6500rpm in 5th which it should be able to do in 1/2 mile, it did 90+mph in the 1/8th. In contrast, my buddies 1000Hp daily driver 'vette does 118mph in the 1/8th. He doesn't want any part of a 1/2 mile run as that would be insane in a street car, a convertible at that.

One must have quite the cahones for that exercise in insanity. Car was running twin 88mm turbos. The funny thing - that particular run wasn't going to be its fastest. The last run the boost was increased 3psi and rev limiter was increased to... gulp... 8200. That's a LOT rotational mass moving inside a 8.6L motor. On the last run based on the boost curve and where it was headed the car was going to north of 230. Unfortunately the motor started to hiccup and the driver got out of it before anything serious happened. Again - pushing 3000+ through a TH400. Insanity.
For those who are interested; here is the motor shot on the viper: ![]() My buddy Jeremy tuning it on the dyno: ![]() - Chris.

I just ran the last event in my Boxster V8, it was awesome. My first time drag racing in a long time and first time ever doing the 1/2 mile. Here is a little video I put together including my misfortune at the end of the day, err well it ended my day

I've not put my car on a dyno but it runs well, crate motor that is supposed to make 480HP. Car weighed in at 2950 in the scales. Ran a very consistent 142MPH. Temps were beautiful like 60* in the morning with no humidity. My buddy John @ Fastlane Imports in Smyrna, GA has an 84 M491 car that was converted to LS1, makes 440RWHP I think and weighs like 2400LBS. Car runs in the high 140's I believe. My guess based on your sig of 402 RWHP depending on the weight of your car and with as hot as it is going to be out there in September you should be pretty happy to get 140~ but wouldn't be surprised if it was less. Good luck out there, go to the drivers meeting, and KNOW WHEN TO SAY WHEN! Don't be like this guy, it is a LONG drop off at the end of the runway, happened 1 race ahead of mine: ![]() ![]() Quote:
![]() Objects in video are not as close as they appear! Now i'm not saying that you wouldn't hit them if you went off, but they are not that close~ Just try pick the left lane, that hill on the left is pretty big and spectators are a lot softer then trees ![]() Beware, thar be Mustangs out thar! YAR! If fact that one I raced that beat me was basically right off the showroom floor, freakin' 670HP Stage 3 Roush running 151 MPH.

JJK78-951, your LS3 Boxster sounds amazing, what a fun package, I didn't know people were putting LSs into them, but I guess everything is getting an LS, why not!

I have an LS1 with a Maggie in my 944. I went to Wanna-go-fast 1/2 mile for a few years with it & ran 140 + or so both visits.
The 1st year I went that speed put me in the top 10. The second year? Bottom ten! People have stepped it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe-9vbcbrK8 Last edited by MichaelB; 06-20-2016 at 06:03 AM.. |

So I just got back from the race today. Had 2 clean runs, both at 133mph. Not bad I guess. Those were fairly soft launches. I did get another run that was feeling really impressive til I blew a boost hose at mid track, so my day was over. Was only hitting 9psi because of the elevation I guess. Good times! BTW, someone was running a Porsche 918. It was running mid 170s

Scott, your board name would seem to indicate you have a 3rd gen RX7? That's what I take to these events, perfect car for the 1/2 after you install a ton of horsepower - tiny frontal area and good aero. My 911 couldn't come within 15mph of what my RX7 traps in the 1/2 even with the RX7 turned down to the 911's power level. Here's a 170mph run in a customer's 1200+ whp RX7 with the boost controller turned off (about 750whp) because the tires just weren't having it, lol:

I was into the third gens for years. Got tired of rebuilding engines. The last setup I had was a half bridge ported motor, with a greddy T-78 turbo kit. Never dynoed it, but should have made somewhere in the 450hp range. LS swaps are more commonplace with those cars these days. I have a buddy looking to sell a really clean roller, perfect for an LS swap if you know anyone interested.
