TurboKraft Full Engine rebuild, EFI, + more - Build Thread

Hey guys,

Chris has been kind enough to let me kick around the shop and document my full EFI conversion as well as the rebuild of the engine and a whole whack of other cool stuff.

I've been documenting everything on my YouTube channel so if you're interested check out the first video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0gPNJdR2b4

But I've been taking a few photos here and there so I'll continue to post them up as the build progresses.

The shop has so many cool and extremely rare cars that I couldn't stop drooling over them when I arrived.

This 964 twin turbo engine has got all the best upgrades including ITB's, 997 GT3 crank and it's going into a RWB car that is at the shop. The want is high!
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-005.jpg

I've longed for a Ruf 930 so seeing one in person and watching Chris and Mike tear down the engine has been spectacular.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-004.jpg

This here is my turd, getting ready to have it's engine and trans extracted. I've contemplated an EFI swap for quite some time after giving up on CIS and trying to tune it. I know some will disagree but I found CIS to be extremely archaic as a fuel delivery source for a modified engine and that's why I decided to go EFI as I want to have the modern perks of reliability, big power production, and ease of tuning that all come with EFI.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-002.jpg

It's inspiring watching Chris and Mike pull a 930 engine and trans. They've got the process down to a T and are so efficient at it.

Same goes for the engine teardown. I've never worked or seen an air-cooled Porsche engine torn down before so having a front row seat for this was incredibly educating and eye opening.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-006.jpg

You could say my engine had a few leaks.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-007.jpg

And this is where we ended the day. My engine is completely torn down and now we send parts off to the machine shop and assembly will start soon!

Wow. I so wish there was a little TK about my engine - good for you!

Exciting to follow, best of luck.

Great pics!

What turbo are you planning on running? Other mods?

You're lucky to have that kind of access, not many shops would allow that!

krasuskyp 03-06-2016 01:23 PM

varrry niiiiice!

and agreed, beyond cool of Chris as usual to allow such access

new shop's lookin *tits*!!!

Very lucky to have the master do his thing.

What's your build sheet?

Pstl_Pete 03-06-2016 07:18 PM

Thanks guys, I'm super lucky indeed!

My build consists of a full bottom end refresh including new bearings on stock rods, full Mahle 3.4L piston kit, cleaned up cylinder heads with new valves and guides, ID1000 injectors, Garrett GTX 35R and will test a 30R as well to see which I prefer, Mcneil headers, Turbosmart BOV & Wastegate, full TurboKraft EFI conversion parts, Vibrant fuel lines, AEM Infinity ECU and coil packs.

Like I said, I'll have videos on all these upgrades and photos to post here in the coming weeks.

Interesting to hear your opinion comparing the 35 and 30 turbos

Hams930T 03-07-2016 07:45 AM

When were you onsite filming the video? - Just curious.

The Garnet car with the 3.45L stroker motor belongs to me :)

- Chris.

Chris,

I've been here since the beginning of the month so have had ample time to check out your awesome ride! The engine is going to be killer!

Excellent, thanks for sharing !!!!

Just posted the next video of the complete engine teardown. I've never witnessed an air cooled Porsche motor come apart so this was absolutely amazing to see come apart.

If you're interested in the process this video is for you:

Awesome video!

^x2. 25 min for a teardown is pretty good, I think I took 45:).

quattrorunner 03-11-2016 03:01 PM

This last video showed up on facebook care of road and track.

MikeD930 03-11-2016 03:26 PM

Man...those TK guys are fast tearing down your car/engine. What they did in one day would take me a month! And oh yeah...that's one nice shop!

R6XTERRA 03-15-2016 06:54 AM

Looking forward to your build. I was just in contact with Chris yesterday about doing my 964 build. I usually hang out on the Rennlist forum.

What kind of HP #s are you going for?

Ps, I am from Kitchener, Ontario.

Jeff

Hope to see this beast back up here on the street!

Pstl_Pete 03-16-2016 03:13 PM

Jeff- I'm not really expecting anything other than reliability. From what I've seen though, I can expect anywhere from 400whp low boost to 500+whp at moderate levels (18-20psi)

Progress has been fast but the machine shop has slowed our pace a bit, we're still waiting for heads which means the rest of the engine can't come together but I know have a short block!

Let me back it up a bit though. I went with the Mahle 3.4L Piston and Cylinder Power Pak because I wanted OE reliability but with a high performance application. This way I get the modern technology of pistons with coatings and modern rings and everything is guaranteed to fit like the factory stuff.

http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-014.jpg

Just check out how pretty the cross hatching is on these cylinders! :D
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-013.jpg

Before Chris and Mike assembled my rotating assembly, they measured everything and determined what rods go with what pistons to ensure the best possible balance.

I'd never even thought of doing this and was reminded again why I left it to the professionals.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-015.jpg

And here's my freshly cleaned and polished crank with my stock rods installed. I did upgrade the rod bolts as Chris said they are the one weak point in an otherwise very robust rod.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-017.jpg

Mike made sure all the piston ring clearances were correct before assembling them with the cylinders. Again, another attention to detail that I was impressed with because technically they should all spec out out of the box.
http://speed.academy/wp-content/uplo...-turbo-016.jpg

When it comes to putting the cases back together, the time spent to ensure there's just the right amount of silicone dabbed onto anything that could possibly leak is staggering. It took Mike and Chris longer to apply the silicone then it did to mate the cases!

But here's to having a leak-free engine from here on out. :D
