930 (1987) Wheel help needed

I will be in the hunt for some new Fuch repros in the coming months. I've read every thread I can find specific to 930s and wheel fitment. The topic of offsets, ET, fitment, etc are not agreeing with my brain, so I am turning to fellow owners to dumb it down for me.

My last set of wheels were BBS LMs 7.5 x 9 and running 205/50 & 255/40 Pilot Sports. To the best of my knowledge, the car has stock spacing. My car is lowered to Euro height and primarily used for street driving and tire wall smashing. I'm going for a more aggressive look but don't need the absolute max amount of beef I can stuff (go for it Paul and Ronnie) in the wells. I dig the Fuchs look and have a manufacturer in mind but I'd like some shared experience on wheel size specifically:

1. are 17" rims still optimum size for tire selection?
2. I see a lot of folks running 9x11. Do 9" fit the front "no problem" or does finessing come into play
3. anyone run a 8 x 10 set up? If so, what are the best tire sizes?

I appreciate any thoughts and thanks for helping me get my car back on the road.

9" front wheels work no problem. Tire choice is more of a concern here. If you run a 255 tire you'll likely rub the tub on the inside. If that is a big concern for you, then run a 245 series tire.

Aspect ratio is the other concern. If you run the 255/40/17 tire - you need to be careful of the OD. Specifically - you run a chance of hitting the oil cooler shield inside the passenger side front bumper. To address the front with a 9" wheel and 255 and make sure you have zero issues, you would want to: 1) roll your front fenders, 2) install rack spacers to limit your turn-in, 3) remove the aluminum bracing inside the front passenger side bumper.

So... With your setup I would recommend you go with a 9" wheel and offset +30. As for the tire, if you want to keep it "safe" then I would go for a 245/40/17. If you want a little more "beef" in there- go for the 255/40/17.

As for the rear... 11" is really not wide for the turbo body. Given that your car is lowered, you could easily run a 11" wheel with +0 ET. In fact, you can really run down to a -5 ET without any issue. Tire size obviously would be a 315/35/17 paired with the 11" wheel. You could technically run a 11.5 +0 ET with a 315 on your height no problem though.

So, for safe setup - I would recommend:

17x9.0 +30 ET with a 245/40/17

17x11.0 +0 ET with a 315/35/17


Aggressive setup:

17x9.0 +30 ET with a 255/40/17

17x11.0 -5 ET with a 315/35/17


Hope this helps you out. I've tried numerous setups on my 930 and I have four sets of wheels covering all the fitments I've noted above.

So, based on Chris's feedback, an awesome movie clip and Ronnie's dig on Paul, it looks like 9x11 with attention to tire size is a good route. Any reason not to run 8 x10s?

I got 3 pairs of 16" BBS wheels with my 930 clone project.

really wanted to use them when I finish the build, but it just seems there are no good street-able options for wide 16". I know one set is 11" wide, and had 315 on them. the other two sets have good but old michellins 225 & 265, not sure of exact widths. they will need to be refinished.

may put them up for sale in case some racer may be able to use with track tires.

only option I found was Mickey Thompson, but have been told they are not good tires for my beast.

car was built with modified 3.3 turbo and steel wide body, but left the stock SC suspension and brakes. planning to put on a 930 brake kit and consider 15" wheels, and upgrade the suspension. I have heard you can still get some wide tires in that size, but need to research further.

Hey bud,

You could run the 8's and 10's combo; but your car is a widebody car. I would say really its just a matter of taste for you. The 9's and 11's combo gives you pretty good options for tires in the 17" range. You could run a 245 tire front and the rear you certainly have a choice between a 295 and a 315.

My personal feeling - if you're going to spend good money on a set of custom built Fuchs in the 17" look - get something that makes a statement. the 11" rears have a 4" lip which looks killer, and the beefy tire under the rear body work just really looks at home.

I don't think you can go wrong with either look.

Hey Will-

Good to see you inquiring on this - means yer car's coming along there, yes?

Your former setup was a bit odd - 205F / 255R is a bit of a disparity, more than I'd want personally.

Only caveat I'll add to going 9/11 vs 8/10 is, weight. If you're sensitive to such inputs (as Ronknees was his first time, but his cavernous echo chamber renders that unpossable now)... (rotational mass sapping power and unsprung weight felt in transitional turning), and you don't "need" the footprint, err on the smaller set.

Also, rubber is cheaper in the smaller sizes (as Ronknees ohso well knows). It's going to look beefay either way, I don't think you'll have any issue there as long as you nail the ride height and offset.

BTW, the $$$ jump from 295 to 315 tires is tangible, as is again the weight penalty. I went 295 on my 11's.

You can also consider 18's heh heh...

With regard to beef, it really all boils down to this resounding phrase that will haunt Ronknees to infinity, as it is ALL he hears from ALL the particularly disappointed dudes (many, and yes - dudes) he's ahem "with":
