Slotted rear bumper - 930 Turbo heat

I have searched the forum and and found some information regarding turbo heat and bumper discoloration.

I think I have a couple of issues with my 1982 930 and the hot bumper issue. The heat shield has been removed...not sure how long ago but certainly before I took the car to Florida. Secondly, the Florida thing...hot summer down here...lots of heat no matter what.

So I'm not sure if there are slotted bumpers available or should I cut the slots myself to help dissipate the heat from the turbo and exhaust rather than cooking the paint off the bumper.

I have not confirmed my timing and air/fuel ratio yet but that is next as well.

1. Put the heat shield back in the bumper
2. Add a turbine housing heat shield if necessary. Forget the "blanket" type cover, only the all-metal type last, i.e. ones that look like dimpled foil

Chris - just went to your website. Can I install that heat shield around the hot side of the turbo without removing the rear bumper?

Bob -- the heat shield we make is only for Garrett turbos. Yes, it can be done with everything still in the car.
If you have an OEM or K27 turbo, you'll need a foil-style one, and those are safety wired in place.

Bob, I don't know of an easy way to put the heat shield on the bumper with the bumper on. Taking off the bumper is one of the easier tasks with these cars, so if it were me, I would remove the bumper, install the bumper mounted heat shield, install the foil style shield over the turbo and then put the bumper back on.

I have a K27 turbo. Yes I think its time to drop the bumper, install the factory heat shield and the foil style shield.

Now as mentioned above - time to find the foil style shield.

I used the thick stick on aluminum and lined the inside of the bumper. I also slotted it. Not good picture..

I added some heat reflective foil to my factory shield. Doubt it was necessary but I had a bunch left over.

i was trying to come with a design for something like an air scoop under the car that would direct more air up and over the turbo.

just a note, my turbo runs cooler after the rebuild, but I did have a good bit of coking inside. not sure if it related but it sure seems like it.

I also sprayed on a heat reflector

Did the same with mine it lasted until the first time I drove the car in the rain. Then it all fell off. Mine was the silver heat shielding from arcraft spruce.

This is the DEI stuff, we'll see if longevity is any better (I'm skeptical).

It gets pretty hot here, so I was more interested in letting the heat out rather than containing it. I was also having oil coking problems, so I figured anything that allowed the heat to escape could only be a good thing.
I removed the valence panel and the rubber seal between the top of the bumper and the body and added a few holes to increase airflow around the turbo. Added benefit is rear weight reduction

Do you still have the car???
How is the venting system (and the bumper) holding up -- in regards to the heat affecting the grill crossbars?
Did you also use some sort of heat shield in front of the bumper/grill?
Do you have any pics of the modification in-progress?

I ran the car like this for two summers without any adverse effects. The bumper used to get pretty hot, but not to the point where the paint on the bumper was affected.
Unfortunately, I sold the car a few years ago just before prices went crazy.

Just found the dimensions of the cutouts. I drilled the 12mm holes and then used a jigsaw to cut out between the drilled holes. Leave enough metal to clean up with a file to get nice straight lines. Naturally, the space for slots depends on the size of your license plate.

i did the same with a fibreglass bumper, didn't want to cut my metal one haha.
works really well.
