Another G50 conversion question
I've researched this to death and still have a question, here it is.
Will a '87-89 NA G50 bolt up to '87 930 engine and tub without needing to shorten the bell and input shaft or cut the tube? yes or no |

No.
If you want to fit a G50 into your 1987 930 chassis you must either: a) shorten the transmissions b) cut out the center of your torsion bar housing and weld in a G50 version -- now you need new custom 930/G50 torsion bars, or convert to coil-overs c) cut out the center of the torsion bar housing and plate it, reinforce it, and tie it back to the chassis; and still convert to coil-overs

Ok, that settles that. I'll stick with the 4 spd. Thanks.

Here's a thread with more info on G50 installs:
Does the G50 transmission 'relocate' the engine? Seemingly when using a '87 930 chassis installing a G50/01 is within a few millimeters of being able to install without cutting. Ugh... sooooo close! |

Great info in that thread, not sure why I missed it in my search. So it looks like it may go in to an '87 tub w/o cutting the tube or the bell if you fab a shift rod extension and trans mount? Also may need some spacers between the cross bar and engine hanger to allow the engine to be moved back a little from the stock '87 location. I have to get out the tape and get my'87 on the lift but I've got other stuff going on right now.

Second, you'll realize this was a terrible idea because nothing else on the engine was designed to sit 1" farther aft, and you now have interference issues everywhere: engine sheetmetal, exhaust, A/C compressor... We've had cars like this in the shop, and they're catastrophes. It's not a good idea. IMO the torsion bar housing mod is the more complicated and expensive proposition. If you find a used G50 you're most likely going to have it disassembled for a full inspection because most of them have a lot of miles at this point, or they've from salvage cars that have been wrecked so badly they're not worth fixing, even in today's market. It the trans is all apart, it isn't that much more to have it shortened.

Thanks Chris, I will have to decide if I want to go thru all this, it would be nice to have the shifting smoothness of the G50. I do have an 8 x 42 mill, I suppose I could jig the case and cut it myself and put the input shaft in the lathe. The cost of a screw up is steep though..
Thanks. |
