turbo- axial plan inquiry

Mornin, Germs - question for the braintrust here:

Motor's out to tend to leaks, found axial play in turbo that I want to run past youseses. It's a Jerry Woods Garret a/r .83 / ITS hybrid, and the shaft has more movement than what I'm accustomed to on any KKK's I've checked for play.

I understand on those that the play may seem excessive as the oil when circulating creates axial tension - is that the same case w/ this unit?

It's probably double than what I'm comfortable with - blades not hitting housing... yet.

OK to keep running it? Car was boosting fine otherwise. Turbo's always whistled pretty damn loudly, albeit Zork'd.

TIA, all...

Is it a ball bearing center housing or journal bearing? Makes a big differance.
A journal bearing center housing has to have a little bit of sideways play for the journal bearings inner and outer diameter oil clearances and a ball bearing center housing shouldn't have noticable play or just a very tiny bit.

You could take a video of the axial play you're talking about and ask Chris at Turbokraft what he thinks. Nobody can make a really good judgement without seeing the movement.
If it's journal bearing, working good, and not blowing any smoke or leaking oil I'd guess you could just leave it as is and enjoy the car.

My brand new Borg had a lot of play. I always laugh when people say, “no shaft play”. Sooooooooo, the shaft is welded to the bearings? 😂

Hmmmm, send vid to CC at TK, or maybe even measure it using dial indicator and send that data to CC@TK. Feels like I've heard that song before?
