Attaching engine to stand
I removed the 3.2 from my 84 Carrera to do basic maintenance and cleaning. I have an engine stand. My question is, how do I secure the engine to the stand? I'm assuming I'm supposed to utilize the gear box studs but they're very long and not threaded all the way to the case. Thanks in advance.

Hello - take a look at the link below to an earlier thread where this is discussed. Hope this helps you out a bit.

This kind of answers my question. I was wondering if all 4 studs would be enough to support the engine. It seems that the half ring utilizes only 2 of the 4 studs! Am I seeing this right? How do you sleep at night with the engine hanging off of two of those studs?

All of the 911 mechanics sleep at night just fine , you will too trust me..It is 2 studs with nuts on the end(some washers between)...here is my 911 official factory yoke with mounting bracket..

The half ring is the mechanics of why it's safe the studs/nuts are just the clamping force.
For a test I tried the heavier full dressed T4 engine on a POS el'cheapo bug T1 motor mount with just the tabs, not a full half ring. Bent the carp out of the tabs, flimsy 2 arms were starting to bend, it was literally hanging off the studs. I wasn't worried about the studs failing. The stand is also important, be careful if you have the HF 1000lbs stand, the one with the single bottom bar, with a fully dressed engine they can be tippy. I don't trust them with a 996 engine, not they can't handle the load, but because they are tippy. I have 6 stands and just got another mount, waiting for stands to go on sale. |
Yes. The stiff, chunky half ring is why it works.
Put the nuts on and torque to the factory spec for holding the engine to the transmission. The large pull of the bolts, probably > 3000 pounds each (full torque on studs that big in diameter is a large! Load) draws it together. The half ring spreads contact out to get wheelbase for the case to react out the bolt tension. Porsche used the same rig to build the 12 and 16 cylinder flat engines in the 60-70s |
