This is how a Vasek Polak (LA) trained Porsche tech working out of his own shop in Lexington KY tuned my 72 2.4 MFI in 1977 . . . put the O2 sensor in the exhaust and drive and stop and adjust - took about an hour, but ran great after the tune . . .


Yes, agree - EFI and chips tuned by Steve Wong are easier and might be better . . . but,
the throttle response of the MFI was great . . . old school Porsche stuff . . .

The 3.6 had a few issues when it came, primarily leaking heads but those have been fixed by now in 95% of all engines. The 3.6 in any form is a really good engine, the pinnacle of the air cooled engines. Nice noise, good power (300 with easy mods), lots of torque, as reliable as they gets.

I have both but in modified forms (intake, exhaust, EFI, cams) and both as very good. I like my 3.2 more even though it lacks ~60hp to the 3.6. But that is just because it has ITB induction, the noise and throttle response is incredible.

Safe, Thanks for this explanation. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 3.6 is a different block, yes? Or is it the 3.2 with larger cylinders?

Now that I think about this, I have no idea how many different blocks Porsche made. For all I know, the 3.6 could be a 'bored out' version of Sboxin's 2.4 ! It's amazing how you can be active in a hobby and totally ignorant of certain aspects! I'll have to study up on this.

I appreciate the appreciation for EFI, but guys programming their Porsches with laptops are a generation smarter than me! I grew up with carberators and know a bit about mechanical injection. Threads on programming timing curves make my head hurt! ;-)
