My first 911 rebuild

Hello, everyone. I wanted to introduce myself to this forum. My name is Jeff and I live in the Seattle area. I'm new here and also new to Porsche engines. Last year I bought a 2.7 engine off a '76 911. I sent it off to Ollie's in AZ, got it back after the holidays and have begun the rebuild while also tending to our 14 month old baby. Needless to say, I would prefer more time in the garage, but that's life.

I have received invaluable advice from a Porsche master in my neck of the woods, John Walker. He's taught me a few tricks of the trade and small, worthwhile tips I would never have read in a book (his preferred engine block sealant, later crank pulley advantages, solex cams for my desired driving style, etc.). And speaking of books, I have scoured through Dempsey's and Anderson's bibles on engine rebuilding.

I've just installed the heads. Cam housings go on in the next few days. followed by my first ever timing of cams. I have JE pistons and - as I mentioned above- Solex cams from Web Cam.

I also bought a nearly rust-free '68 912 from Arizona a few months ago. This engine will go in there as a popular "outlaw" conversion. If the 912 had the original engine, I would have left it alone but I now see this as an opportunity to fulfill my dream of owning a "911" at an attainable price.

Please see the attached pics. I also have an Instagram account where I am documenting the rebuild (@jrcoleron). I would appreciate all of your help with my project. I have a lot of questions so you'll probably get sick of me (HA!).

Looks good. Why are your case halves different colors? Not that anyone will ever see it.

Nice work. I like the patina that Ollie’s process renders.
Looks like a pretty thick copper cylinder shim. Mine are not nearly as visible... is that just how the older motors were built?

FYI , along the lines of base shim thickness. I like to make sure the squish clearance , piston to the head is .040" +_ .002". I was taught that this clearance is of the utmost importance . Your work looks very clean and purposeful . Well done
Just my thoughts
Ian
