Oil crossover pipe installation - frustration...
Hi everyone,
Extremely frustrated. Finishing up installation of my rebuilt 1989 911 Carrera 3.2 engine, and can't get a tool to the case side nut. Looks like I was supposed to install the pipe before the heat exchangers. Just wasnt thinking ahead. Extremely tight spacing. Can i even get in there with the special tool? Do i need to remove the left heat exchanger? I really really dont want to go loosening up gaskets and fasteners that i carefully torqued down while on the stand. Do i have any options? I went back in both books i have been following and neither mention this as critical to install before headers... extremely frustrated with myself... If i do need to remove or lower header, trying to think of most intelligent way to do that with removing least number of fasteneres... Mark

I ended up removing the heat exchanger. Couldn’t see another quick way...

Crowfoot wrench........
Mark,
Did you try a crowfoot wrench to tighten this big nut before removing the HE? As you know by now, that oil has to be in placed before installing the heat exchangers. You are not alone, we all make this kind of mistake. Tony |

Yes, must be installed before HEs.

If you used a collapsible (2 piece) oil return tube there, maybe you could have gotten a tool on that big nut. I put one there just in case. It is close quarters even with the headers off.

Was going to say the same thing. Hack the oil return tube out so you have clearance and replace with a collapsible one.
