Engine number's obscured?

Hey there,

So I have been trying to sort out what kind of motor I have in my '79 911 (likely ROW car) while I start planning my rebuild. Through a number of searches I have identified the case number (930.10) but when I look at the numbers on the base of the fan mine seem intentionally partially obscured. Does this look right to you or am I missing some characters?

It reads *63C0 I believe.

Best,

Matthew

I don't know how Illinois views modified serial numbers but in California that case would be subject to impound.
We would not rebuild it if a customer brought it to us.
As expensive as it will be to replace the case, having your Porsche impounded might be far more expensive and inconvenient as hell.

Perhaps your DMV or state police can raise the original number and verify it's provenance to alleviate your concerns.

*Keep in mind that if the number was intentionally obscured, it's reasonable to assume that they had nefarious intent*.

An x-ray should reveal the original number. There is equipment that can do that. There is a big fraud in Europe with fake cars made from stolen cars that has been identified by this.

A 1982 engine, the last 4 where 3 is missing is a serial number. So someone has not tried to hide the type of engine just the specific engine...

Identifying tampered serial number........

There is a chemical etching process used by law enforcement agencies to restore or identify tampered serial numbers on metals like engine or gun serial numbers. A technician would put some chemical reagents using an eye dropper on the area where the serial number/s is located. In a short time, the original serial number will gradually appear and with the help of a magnifying glass, you could clearly identify the number or character? This is Forensic 101.
