Cam Damaged in Shipping

Well, I just got some really nice Cams in the mail but there wasn't anything protecting the end and it took a hit. Is this still useable? I plan on sending everything off to have it checked and machine if needed. It is a non contact surface. Thoughts?

That sucks but it's just the drive for the adjusting wrench. Did it damage the threads?
Get the cam magnafluxed and checked for straightness, if a pass you're good to go.

BTW did that chip off? Cams are quite hard but brittle, not sure but I think some type of cast.

I'd defiantly get it magnafluxed, but I think it wouldn't crack, likely it would just break.

It chipped off as the ends weren't padded at all. You can see a hole in the box where it hit something. Everything else seems fine. Will the machine shop handle the magnaflux process?

When I buy cams now, I ask the seller to wrap the cams individually and double box them, to survive the abuse that shippers inflict.

When I sent mine off I slid them in two lengths of white pvc pipe and caps. You can get them at Lowe’s or Home Depot for chump change.

Although I believe the cams are serviceable (your inspection is important) if this situation bothers you, it is easy to cut the end off the cams, bore and tap them to accept the later bolt and conical washer vs the spring washer /nut design.

It is really disappointing because just a piece of cardboard at each end would have kept them perfect. They are both really nice low mileage cams.

I guess I will go with them after inspection.

Do you think they should be sanded some to remove the rough broken surface?

Sure, why not.

I've also seen damage like that from using the wrong kind of wrench while torqueing the large nut. Either way, assuming no other damage, I'd dress the area with a file and not worry about it.

That is good to know. Looking at the box, it seems like it occurred during shipping. I took so much care in taking mine off with the Stromski tool only to find they were pitted. Once I got the engine out of the car.. there has been a surprise at every turn.
