New order
I am ordering 10 sets of pistons.SS 66 X 95MM.66 X 98MM.5 sets of SS 70.4 x 98mm.3 sets of 3.2-3.4 98mm.These are all sold. These will be done in the end of October.I will make another run and at this time they will be done in the middle of November.I need 6 orders to commit.Ciao Fredhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1656460866.JPG

Can't wait for our set Fred!
Thank again for taking our order and the time you spent on the phone with me. Cheers |
new stuff
Bump & the Filet Cheese steaks were killer.

I too, am excited to get the 95s for my SC case, Supercrank, short stroke 2.8 build! I finally got my longer rods so I can think about getting busy. Still, knowing me, October delivery should be no problem!
|
New design
I have 10 different sets that should be done by around the end of September with this current order.Fred
|
Hi Fred, are there still gains to be had with dual plugs? If so then how much? It seems that with your design the flame front doesn’t travel as far and the pocket creates a cleaner burn so single plug should suffice.
|
twin plug
You can run a higher CR than normal with single but twin plug is still safer being more retarded. With 91 Octane twin would be better.

A few more pics with the bottom of the valve pockets shaded in to better show the shape.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1657484774.JPG
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1657484774.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1657484774.JPG It is a unique design which promotes more complete combustion and increases flow.I have a CIS model with shallower valve pockets and the flat area of the top center is dropped even lower to increase air flow through the head.Great benefit to run a hotter cam and retain the simplicity and reliability of the CIS.Very California friendly. Thanks for looking.Fred |
Very cool design. It's like the opposite of the "peanut" heads that Henry posted a very long time ago.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/434823-old-school-twist.html I guess I need to save my money for next build. |
different sizes
I can make different sizes suited to whatever CR you need.I just had a request for 85mm for a 2.5L.No problem.Welcome to the new modern piston which out performs all that have preceded this design. Thanks for SmileWavylooking Fred
|
HMM. I have a 2.5 on the build slot. 90x66. Currently planning 10.5:1 twin plug.
What CR could I get away with for single plug? Could you describe a little about the limits of CR and single vs twin plug? |
new design pistons
Just ordered a set of 100mm.Ordered at 11:1 to end up at around 10:5 CR after the valve job.If you do a valve job on an SC and reface the valves which drops them a little lower your CR can change from 8:5 to 1 down to 7:8 or 7:9 to 1.Always CC your motor when you take it apart. It may have had a valve job already.I have seen race engines that were 9:2 to 1.

OK Fred, you and everyone else here know wayyyyy more than I. I have a stock 3.0 SC that need a top end. Which would I order and/what benefits would a stock motor gain? It sounds to me, a novice here, that you guys are all talking about hot rodded motors?? Or, what mods would I need to make them work with my engine? Cams etc. I know more that you want but I have to know what to buy.....
Thanks Sean |

This is great Fred, we talked about these for my SC at the engine built class last year. Great to see them in the flesh.... I'll have to see if these will fit within a budget of mere mortals... might have to put up or shut up on my engine with these and some good cams.
Good to have you in the community! |
Geronimo
I have 12 sets of various sizes on order from CP.They will be done by the end of October. The 95mm pistons weigh about 400 grams.About 3 lbs.less than the stock pistons.I can find something to scratch your itch. Thanks for your comments.SmileWavyFred

What is the CR vs 1983 911SC 49 state us in California, land of the Smog Nazi. Car would need to pass smog test. A long request, kicking the HP is my desire. 964 cams and everything stock.Any thoughs?

Thanks,
I will hit you up in the spring... going to finally pull the engine and get to it I think. I'll have to give you a call, maybe you can help me a bit in choosing the right set up. :D |

I am so sorry to hear that Fred has passed but wanted to see if there are people out there that have paid Fred a deposit and are waiting for pistons. I know mine were close but getting coated.
Do you all think it makes sense to contact Jerry Roche and let him know before he sends more piston orders to Fred as his wife might be overwhelmed right now? |
love to see this thread stay alive with the results of builds from Fred's pistons - and / or continued development based on his design... RIP Fred
|
I talked to Fred’s son, James and he’s managing the 9 piston orders that are in process. If someone needs his contact info feel free to give me pm.
|
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the out reach of support from the members of pelican parts as my family works through this time.
My Name Is James Apgar Im Fred Apgars son, I actually sat down at my home computer to create a log in to update this thread for my father and found my dad had left his account signed in. We will be continuing with piston production, right now in the interim no deposits are being taken as im trying to get everything square away with current orders. I will be fulfilling all of the current orders in a timely manner. Please feel free to contact my fathers screen name if you need anything and I will gladly pass my contact info along. Thank you From my entire family. Your community amazes me James |
Sorry for your loss James. I never met him but your dad seemed like a good guy.
|
RIP James… no words suffice… big hugs…
|
James - I’m sorry for your loss. I used to catch up with Fred on his way to your house. We would meet in Middletown Delaware. Meeting up with Fred was like talking to a Porsche celebrity who immediately became your friend. Best to you and your family.
|
James, all the best to you and your family. I got to know your dad this year on the phone and via email. A true gem, as you know. Lost my father this year as well.
Prayers are with you and your family. All the best. Cheers |
Very sad to hear Fred is gone. After reading many of his helpful posts and fascinating stories I was so happy to meet him at Tony's engine rebuilding class in 2021. He immediately impressed with his knowledge, approachability, generosity, and willingness to engage with my 'creative' ideas.
Class act and a cool dude. Best wishes to you and your family. Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk |
Luckily Matt B was willing to wave the admin queue time for me so I am finally able to access the forum from my own user name and contribute.
From one car guy to a group of car guys- you guys rock. I’ve read every comment and thank you. My dad was the ultimate car guy to me and was a wealth of general automotive Knowledge as well as Porsches. He also passed along all the principles and some of the knowledge of going fast to me. Currently we are caught up on back orders. If anyone needs a set of pistons please shoot me a message we have a few in stock. 3.0-3.4 James |
