Triangle of Death: Using combined oil pressure/low pressure switch.

I did not want to mess up the thread that got me going on the idea that the oil pressure sender and oil pressure switch (low oil pressure light) could be combined by using the later 964/993 combined sensor/switch.

Considering that I am doing a completely new engine build for my restomod, I liked the idea that I could take the oil pressure sender can off of the front of the engine where it seems to be more or less in the way and have one less sensor part hanging around.

Here is the thread for reference where the idea came from:

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/1129460-s-amazing-things-you-find-someone-s-build-2.html

Well, I did a bunch of research and ended up that the sensor I am going to get is the 964 version as it seems to meet requirements as detailed here:

https://vdo-webshop.nl/en/pressure-senders/333-vdo-pressure-sender-0-5-bar-m18-4103590690968.html

Our host sells it as:

https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/92860620301.htm?pn=928-606-203-01-INT&fc=Y

Upside is that it mounts into the engine case with a 18mm thread, which eliminates the need for the 1/4 NPT adapter (or M10 as in some cases), again which eliminates another part and sealing ring. I checked on my case and the case is threaded with M18 x 1.5.

I believe this will work, it ought to fit with my later gauge (5 bar, 1979 based, rebuilt by NH Speedometer).

Downside is the wiring harness needs to be modified, not a problem for me since I am building a new custom harness.

if anyone sees any errors in my logic, please let me know....I am getting ready to pull the trigger on buying the sensor for the build.

D.

Replacing the separate idiot light sensor and the oil pressure sensor with a single combined unit is easy to do. VDO sells these in both 5 and 10 bar values, and (as I recall) in maybe several thread configurations.

I got tired of even epoxy reinforced idiot senders leaking, so I took one apart and welded up its central hole, then put it back, plugging the hole in the triangle area. I added the dual sender where the oil pressure sender goes. Ran a short wire from where the idiot light wire ended, and there you go. Either way you need to come up with a plug of some sort.

But the reverse would be equally simple. I like having easy access to things, so favored that location.
