Is there a way to test oil pumps? Alternatively a recommended inspection procedure? We're doing a complete rebuild of our 914-6 engine (same as 1969 911T 2.0L as I understand it). We have the 3-rib magnesium oil pump that appears to be original. It turns freely with my fingers. It will get spirited street driving only, so I'm not feeling compelled to replace it if working as designed.

As an alternative to replacing it, you could send it to Glenn Yee for rebuild and blueprinting.

There are some specs for the clearances between the gears and the housings, and between the gear teeth. I don't know what those specs are, but a search here may find them. I'll say this, make sure the pumps are within the specs, especially the scavenge side. Otherwise you will end up with the case filling with oil becuase the scavenge doesn't keep up with the pressure side. There's also a mod on early engine cases to allow the oil pressure valve to send excess oil back into the supply side of the system, instead of dumping it in the bottom of the case, where it has to be scavenged again.

Tear it down and check it out. Better safe than sorry.
Not a big deal to do, lots of threads on it. |
