new rebuilt engine first start help..

Question for the engine experts. I purchased a fully rebuilt 83 3.0 engine. It was rebuilt, and has been stored properly since 2015. It was originally rebuilt to potentially sit while car was being restored... that never happened as owner passed away. Any tips for the best way to get it ready for the first start ..Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Pull out all 6 spark plugs and crank until you see the oil pressure gauge move. A little Wd-40 down the cylinders won’t hurt before you crank…optional. The best way to get a little oil in there is to use an old leak down or compression hose that threads in the s/p hole.

Congratulations for acquiring a new replacement motor. I guess you have the motor already installed in your car now and getting ready for the first start-up. You will get a lots of good tips from people in this forum. As the saying goes, there are several ways to skin a cat. I do it differently than the conventional way and been very successful in my endeavors. Being cheap and frugal, I tend to use what I have at my disposal.



You already have most of the parts except the starter holder and some fuel lines. I simply test run the motor before installing the engine in the car. Imagine if you get into a problem running the motor while it is installed in your car. It is not how hard your work but how smart you did the job to accomplish your goal.

If not installed, I would start it on a stand. Much easier to address any issues out of the car.

Is this the 1st start the engine will have on it or the first start after a prolonged sitting? I don't know if there is a big difference, but I would think a 1st start from a completely rebuilt engine would have different concerns/need than a previously ran engine that has been sitting?

I ask because I had my engine rebuilt, it was fired and ran by the builder on stand and readjusted. I have had the engine sitting for 6 months and it will be another 2 months or so before I can fire it up again. I will be cautious about starting it, but not fearful. I will crank it with out spark or fuel to get the oil pressure up before firing it up.

Thank you for replying. Engine had a complete rebuilt and then run on stand. it was then stored appropriately as the owner new his car would be a couple years of restoring.. he passed away before every actually installing. Since then, it was stored in a warm dry shop. Turning over with no spark or fuel is a great idea. Thank you !
