faapgar has passed away
It is with great sadness I inform the Porsche engine community of Fred Apgar's passing yesterday. He was an incredible wrench and had a tremendous amount of knowledge when it came to air-cooled Porsche's. I knew Fred my whole life and he will be forever missed.

Might be worth posting this on the main 911 technical section where it might get more traffic as i am sure there are people that would want to know.

Wow, we talked on the phone but never met.
He once told me a Apgar relative developed the Apgar score that babies get when they are born. Fred was a great guy, RIP.

Just spoke to Fred on the phone last month. Terrible news.... My goodness.
Was just getting to know him over the last year or so with a phone call every month and a few more emails. We chatted aircooled porsches, pistons and his desire to learn more about 996 transmissions from me. Learned far information/knowledge than I offered on those calls. Always polite and respectful to everyone. True Gem that will be missed greatly in the entire community. Wishing his family prayers and best wishes. Cheers

So very sad to hear this news. What a great guy, he was very helpful and generous with his time. I got a lot of tips from him as I slowly work on my engine. He knew so much about these engines,.and hadn't lost that youthful excitement that is so contagious. I will miss chatting with him on the phone

Sad to hear! This forum has lost a kind and knowledgeable guy!
You never heard him speak condescendingly to anyone, regardless of your level of (or lack of) knowledge. Always ready with his knowledge. Condolences to his family, and those of you who knew him! |

My condolences to Fred's family. I didn't know him and never met him, but last year when I needed to locate an IMS cover for my 66 911 engine. Fred reached out to me and not only had one, HE WOULDN'T TAKE ANYTHING FOR IT!! I covered the shipping. He just wanted me to help someone else out if I could down the road. He was what everyone on this forum should try to be.
Thank you, Fred my engine is back from the builder and I wish you could have heard it sing!! Joe D

Other than in business, I didn't know Fred very well but I liked him.
The circle of life includes death and it is unpredictable. Do what needs to be done, now Do what you want to do, soon Right the wrongs that need correcting as they happen. Catching up isn't always possible. Rest in peace Fred.

I was just browsing some posts, but I couldn't help but reply to this one. I'm sorry to hear about Faapgar's passing, even though I know this post is pretty old. Losing someone who has been a part of your life for so long is never easy. My condolences to you and everyone who knew Fred. I'm dealing with a loss in my family too. My aunt passed away today. It's been tough, but I'm helping organize the funeral arrangements. In my search for ideas, I stumbled upon memorial bench inscription ideas, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Do you think it's a good way to honor someone's memory? I've seen some pretty cool ones, like ""Gone but never forgotten,"" ""Forever in our hearts,"" or even ""She Lived, Laughed, and Loved."" What do you think?
