2.2 ticking
Hi All,
bare with me and I'll try to give you all information so you can help me with the analysis of my problem. I have restored a 1971 2.2T engine to almost stock spec. The only derivation from stock are an 123-ignition distributor and K&N air cleaners. A friend of mine and myself did all the work. We had new rings, bearings, cam drive and chain, valve guides etc. Old cam, pistons and cylinders. Restored original TIN40 carbs. I did the break in as per Wayne's book. When the engine was broken in I went to a very well reputed engine shop that specializes on air cooled hi performance engines. We ran it on his dyno and he did some small adjustments to carb and ignition and it delivered up to 6000 the expected 130 hp. He gave me thumbs up. It all sounded very nice! Now I have driven it about 1500 kilometers since break in. It ran really good without any issues in all conditions. I while ago I heard some ticking. It got worse slowly buy shurely. It sounded like a sewing machine and I knew someting was not right. I was hoping I missed to safely secure one of the valve adjusters. I had a stethoscope and the ticking came from 6th cylinder on top. I removed the valve cover and the 6th cylinder intake valve adjuster was way off, about 1,5 mm. The adjuster locking nut was tight so it had not moved. What kind of problem do I have here? I'm thinking broken valve spring... What do you think? Thanks for any input! Here is it on the dyno: https://youtube.com/shorts/xg7KAiTAlE8?feature=share Jörgen Forssling Gothenburg SWEDEN Last edited by Forssling; 07-31-2023 at 01:50 AM.. |

It is not uncommon to have to re-adjust the valves after the initial run it. As all the new parts wear in the clearance can change.

Sounds alarming and it is a good idea to check what is going on.
Beside the valve spring you mentioned, I would see that either the valve does not seat properly anymore or there is a problem related to valve actuation: - Valve seat moved - Valve not fully seated (dirt/objects or bent valve stem) - Rocker arm bushing wear (lubrication issue ?) - Rocker arm (wear or started to bent/crack/fail) - Rocker shaft (wear/play) - Camshaft lobe (wear, lubrication issue?) Good luck finding the culprit

Is it possible that your carbs have a leak at the shaft......?? This can result in a ticking sound.
regards, al

Hi All!
Now I have some info on what happened to my engine. The camshaft lobe and lifter on intake cyl 6 was worn down. This happened because of insufficient lubrication. The engine was full of rubber particles. When the block was split it was evident that it was the block sealer. I used the proper Loctite 574. We assemlied the engine halves i august 2020. The expiration date on the bottle is Feb 28 2021. A bad batch? Did the seller stock them in a bad way? Not an original Loctite product? I had them i room temperature all the time. Let me know what you think of all this. All the best, Jörgen Forssling SWEDEN ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Sorry to hear. Hope you did not end up with „fake“ Loctite. Quite some counterfeits around from Chinese fake shops. Your bottle shows Asian lettering, which I do no recall from my Loctite bottles. Of course might be genuine product produced for the Asian market. Did you check the QR-code on the bottle ? You might also contact Henkel for advice.

Thanks Guenter, I'm trying to find out what I have, if it's fake or not. It looked the part when applied. I've reached out to Henkel but got no answer yet. The QR-code got me here:

Thank you all for your support! I now have got the answer from Henkel that closes this case.
Beware out there! Dear Jörgen, Thanks for providing the pictures, based on a series of internal verification, we conclude that The product on the images is NOT genuine Henkel product because considerable deviations exist on the packaging (such as batch code, QR code) of the product. Best regards, Henkel Product Verify Team All the best, Jörgen |

Terrifying,
next time I will start a new bottle of Loctite (or any other brand sealant) I will first start with some sample seals to make sure it hardens as supposed. Must be very frustrating for you, but guess you have to dismantle the engine and start all over again ?

I can't speak for elsewhere but if you're in the UK the retailer is liable for your losses.
