Got my 1st 3.6 engine project

Hi guys, I'm new to this section as I have never fully rebuilt a 911 engine before, but I know the 3.2 and older engines very well and worked on them for more than 20 years since I own two cars and do all the maintenance and power mods myself.

Now for the elephant in the house, yesterday I got myself a partial 993 3.6 engine that came out of a '95 993, I say partial because its missing :

- hyd. rocker parts.
- cam chain tensioners.
- oil pump
- fan and alt.

Also it has one brocken head that needs to be replaced and all 6 pistons and cyl. needs to be replaced.

Now for the questions :

- Is it a good idea to switch to mechanical rockers instead of hyd.?
- I see that 993 heads are way costly than 964s, is it a direct swap to use 964 heads?
- one of the spigots has a small damage, is it possible to weld fill it and then machine it round to the correct diameter?

My 2 cents. You can use 964 heads but I’d keep the 993 heads if you have them. They are supposedly better if you want more performance generally with bigger valves, better alloy. Going to mechanical rockers is a plus if you’re building a hot rod or race engine with higher lift cams. If you want a more maintenance free street system then hydraulic with variorum is more practical.
