Valve Cover Washers

Anyone remember these washers? I was combing thru some old stuff and found this little jewel. I recall have to mess with them upon removal of my valve covers.

I don't recall those. All the valve cover washers I've seen are plain aluminum alloy and are supposed to deform a little bit when torqued. Maybe someone else has seen them.

I have seen washers with a rubber inner part that are used to seal drain plugs or bolts that go into holes with oil on the other side, but not on 911's.

Those were actually an attempt to remedy a leaking issue on the 6 bolt lowers that came on 2.0 aluminum engines.
The valve cover gaskets were made of cork and leaking was pretty common.

Henry, I think they used to come in the 11 stud kits in 1986 or so. I had some terrible leaks on my 1972 911T with Magnesium lower covers. I couldn’t afford the raised rib turbo covers, later years they were the standard issue. Even with the better gaskets, not cork, I resorted to using a motorcycle gasket glue on them called Yamabond. Made by Yamaha. What a mess during valve adjustments.

1986, or 1968? The 2.0 aluminum engines were 1960's. That was before my time. I was modifying Schwinn Stingray bicycles then!

Re the leaking valve covers, I think the best solution yet is the gaskets with silicone beads on them. If you are not using those yet, switch when you change them next.

No no pete, I was referring to the years I had my 1972 911T in 1986 thru 1998. I drove that puppy over 140,000 miles and never a failure. Bought for 5k, put 4k into it, drove it for 12-13 years and sold it for 8k. What a great car. It just needed more HP.

That motorcycle gasket glue called yamabond is actually threebond, Yamaha just put their name on it and doubled the price.
