case assembly oh **** moment!

woke at 4:30 this morn- realized that when i finally got everything ready yesterday and sealed the case after reading 742 entries on the ultimate sealing thread, i had forgotten to check the lash on the intermediate shaft!!!!!

if i need to bust the case open, so be it- will spend the next two days drunk and then get to it

is there any way to check/adjust/etc at this point???

You can feel it by holding the chains and working them in and out. How would you adjust it anyway, other than replacing the aluminum gear or the complete shaft?

Paralysis through analysis, people worry way too much about putting these motors together, it’s not a top fuel dragster. Go back to drinking Mondays coming fast.

a few years ago when I was building my personal motor, I remember doing it to try and isolate a slight knocking sound that appeared during warm up.
ie, when cold, when started the engine was quiet... a few minutes in the slight knocking sound would appear.. then at full temp it was quiet again.

Reading everything I could, I found where someone said the steel gear that drives the ims shaft, had worked loose on his crankshaft... I thought to have that checked. My machinist thought I was bonkers.
I checked my ims gear lash and it was surely out of spec. Someone suggested it might have been the cause of the noise.. everything was replaced... everything was in spec.

Completed the build of the motor.... (did it purely to try and fix the noise).... and the bloody thing did it still.

Do what John says, pull the chain tight and try to rock the shaft back and forth with the chain, if u hear or feel any clicking your golden. Clearance only grows with temperature.

I had the same thing when I rebuilt my SC motor from the crank up. Figured I had missed something. Tore it down again. This time I had the rod ends rebushed. They were in spec but I was looking for the noise.
Put it back together - and it did the same thing. I gave up.
That rebuild was about 15 yrs ago. The motor is fine, no oil drops anywhere, runs like a swiss watch - and the noise has gone. I guess it is in someone elses motor now.

There is no shortage of those. Half of them have been lurking in my 930 lately. I have sent them on their way.
They will be looking for a new home - right now.

I have redirected them - elsewhere. To those who don't pay attention to this forum and the advice. They are on their way.
