Hey! Nice Rack! "Celette"
|
Material Question
I will be heading into an engine install in a couple months once I get 13666 or the She Devil back in paint. (factory 914-6 with a chassis number given to her by chance) I haven't really looked over the engine I have much. I purchased it 10 years ago from Slits (Ron Meyer.) He as since passed away so I can't really ask him about it.
I was told it is a 73 S. It has CIS. If I have to dig into it I would like to start thinking about what I have in advance. Questions: Is the 73 block aluminum or magnesium? What Cylinder Material came as part of the original 73 S engine Alusil or Aluminum? What were the guides Copper or Bronze? I have Wayne's book someplace but can't find it yet since I moved. ![]()

Brass or Bronze guides sounds promising. Thanks

Early S motors had biral cylinders - cast iron sleeve surrounded by an aluminum structure and fins.

The '73S had Biral cylinders and a Magnesium case. It also had MFI, not CIS.
I believe the '73 Carrera 2.7 was the first time they used Nikasil. The cylinder heads for the CIS were quite a bit different than the E or S engines, and had the injector port built in. To figure out what engine you have, take a look at the right side of the engine by the fan housing to see what engine type you have. This is from my 73.5T CIS, type 911/91. The T engines came with cast iron cylinders

Check the engine type code near the fan to confirm the year/model. In case the engine has been rebuilt and/or parts swapped at some point ... look at the cylinder heads. The mounting position for the MFI and CIS injectors is different. That will tell you not only what you have, but should also give a hint if it was updated to different injection at some point. Though it would be odd to put CIS on an MFI S motor. With early S cams it wouldn't run very well.
