I recently purchased a 1976 911S 2.7L motor. I am restoring a 1973 911 Targa that I will be putting this motor into. I need some suggestions on engine design options. This is my first Porsche Engine reubild.
Here is what I have The long block is all together. camshafts look to be in good shape Engine turns over and seems to have good compression Here is what I have CIS Camshaft Carrera tensioners Turbo valve covers 1970's Heat exchanger exhaust system I am looking to leave the long block as is, replace some seals but don't crack the case, for now. Looking to do a more modern EFI system - suggestions on which ? Replace stock distributor with MSD Box and blaster - suggestions ? Exhaust, keep old school heat exchanger or go to stainless steel headers Anything else I should be thinking about as I clean up and rebuild this motor ?

Did it have case-saver inserts installed for the head studs? Is it original? What else do you know about the history of the motor and what parts were put into it?

case-saver inserts look like they were installed. Not sure of any other upgrades besides what I listed above.

![]() 2 of my valves look a little crusty inside. Any suggestions on what to do and why this would happen ?

That's rust and it looks like water sat in the ports for awhile. I would then suspect that the intake valves that were open allowed water into the cylinders. The intake manifold stud in that picture is also pretty rusty. At a minimum, I would put a camera into the cylinders through the spark plug holes and inspect them for signs of water or corrosion.
Did you get any of the CIS system with it, or just the long block? Lots of threads here about EFI for air-cooled engines, so spend some time reviewing those. And what's your budget?

I only have the long block. I am looking to add an EFI system, yet to be determined. Not totally sure on budget. I want to build the motor right but also don't want to break the bank.
I put a camera in the cylinders. For the most part they look good. A few cylinders have a good amount of build up. let me know your thoughts ? Do I need to open up these cylinders ? ![]() ![]() ![]()

With that amount of rust it does show that water was sitting and/or weeping into the cylinders. Where did you get this engine? I am not too sure if I would trust it without pulling the top end off. Just because it "turns over" doesn't mean the cylinders are not pitted, corroded or otherwise.
Was this some online purchase or local? |

That's not a very clear picture, but I agree with Sal. I would take off the heads and inspect the cylinders and pistons and rings more closely.
